FTS takes a look at the best of 2013 with a series of genre top 5 lists for 2013 In Review.Up next, we count down the best comedy movies of the past year. Take a look!
#5. We’re the Millers
The thing about We’re the Millers is how unexpectedly funny this movie was. It didn’t seem like it would particularly be a winner, but it actually does hit a ton of comedic high notes. Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston have easy comedic chemistry, Emma Roberts maintains her best bitch face, and Will Poulter gives a shockingly hilarious performance. If those four weren’t enough Nick Offerman and Kathryn Hahn come in for an added bonus. It’s fairly ridiculous (the kissing lesson scene is kind of amazing), and doesn’t work 100% of the time, but it’s filled with plenty of laughs to earn a spot on this list. -Jess
#4. Anchorman 2
Anchorman 2 takes some of what made the first movie funny and some of what Adam McKay and Will Ferrell have done since then and combines it all into a new weird, wild package. A solid comedy all the way through, Anchorman 2 catches up with the news team roughly 10 years from where we left them. This allows for some new material, but mostly the movie relies on the cast’s crazy deliveries to supply the laughs. -Rob
#3. Wolf on Wall Street
This movie caught me off guard at how funny it was. I expected laughs with Jonah Hill and Rob Reiner in the film, but they’re both greatly overshadowed by Leonardo DiCaprio who is physically funny. In the penultimate “lemon scene” of the film, Leo is able to contort his body in ways that harken back to the Jerry Lewis slapstick comedies of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. -Nick
#2. The World’s End
Around these parts the first two films in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto trilogy – Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz – are held with pretty high regard, so when the trilogy closer, The World’s End, came out, and I started thinking this could be the best one yet, well that says a damn lot. If you’re a fan of either of those films, or Wright’s TV show Spaced, then chances are you’ll love The World’s End too. If you don’t like any of those things, well then I don’t want to know you. -Jay
#1. This Is The End
This early year favorite managed to hold it’s steam and remains one of the funniest film’s of the year. It’s conceptually ludicrous – an apocalyptic tale centering around James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride all of them playing exaggerated versions of themselves. The crew really pulls it off by fully committing to the idea of making fun of their flaws. It’s the same gut busting brand of humor you’ve come to expect from all of the individual comedians, thrown together in one hilarious film. -Lindsay
*Notable Exceptions : The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Pain & Gain, It’s a Disaster, Monsters University, The Way Way Back, Enough Said, A.C.O.D.
