Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of The Collection: Saw
The sequel to the 2009 film The Collector, titled The Collection, isn’t half bad if you’re into that kind of thing. It’s over-the-top, gory, and cringe inducing. As an alternative to the theater, you can stay at home with Saw. I suppose this is a pretty easy match up. The Collection director Marcus Dunstan is responsible for writing most of the later Saw films in the franchise.
Instead of Killing Them Softly: Fargo
There is something about the trailer for Killing Them Softly the screams Coen Brothers to me. Maybe it’s the plain color palette or the mixture of humor and violence, whatever it is, I get that vibe. So if you can’t make it out to see the new flick, check out a Coen classic at home, Fargo. The Coen’s are working on all their best levels with Fargo, a film about a pregenant police cheif investigating a murder in the quaint Fargo, North Dakota. The movie stars William H. Macy, Frances McDormand and Steve Buscemi.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
This Blu Ray pick is a no-brainier. Even though I wasn’t as impressed with TDKR as some of my other FTS counterparts, the movie is an undeniable spectacle. The biggest of summer blockbusters and the most anticipated film in the new Batman franchise, TDKR delivers all the explosions, drama and action you could ask for. It’s a safe bet that anything Christopher Nolan puts out will make for a special feature jam packed disc as well.
Young Adult (2011)
When I first saw Young Adult last year, I wasn’t thrilled with the ending Jason Reitman chose for the main character Mavis. Something felt off and unfinished, but with a recent re-watch, I felt differently. The movie is hilarious and dark and anchored by a rock solid portrayal of a damaged has-been by Charlize Theron. See it for her performance alone, which was easily on of the best performances of 2011.
Young Adult Netflix Synopsis: Taken aback when she receives a letter from an old boyfriend announcing that he’s just had a baby with his wife, divorced fiction writer Mavis Gary decides to return to her small hometown and reconnect with her former lover.
What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
