I avoid watching certain films depending on my mood and how my body is feeling. Nothing too depressing if I’m having a rough day, no subtitles if I can barely keep my eyes open, that sort of thing. But these are movies that always make hungry, regardless of when I eat.

WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY If you’re like me and have a tremendous sweet tooth, it’s damn near impossible to watch this film without craving a candy or chocolate snack. I don’t even eat candy very often but even the opening credits of this film are just so effective. Give me all the chocolate, gummy bears and litany of indistinguishable Wonka-creations.

HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE This movie is downright mean. You know what the central premise is based on the title but who could possibly be prepared for that tantalizing White Castle commercial? Then you have to wait the entire run time for the characters to get any payoff and THEN you realize you’re just sitting there, White Castles-less like a loser. It’s not right!

SUPERSIZE ME I get that this seems like a strange inclusion for this list because the entire purpose of the documentary is to showcase how terrible McDonald’s food is for you but come on man – we already know that! Now you’ve just spent 90 minutes blasting me with McD’s advertising spots and staying “fries” about 300 times – I’m expected to not want a double cheeseburger now? Of course I’m going to get one the next time I drive anywhere, eat it in 2 minutes and immediately regret every life decision I’ve ever made. Thanks a lot, Morgan Spurlock!

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI This is hands-down one of the hardest movies to watch on an empty stomach. If you have any amount of love for sushi this movie is straight food porn. It’s also a fantastic documentary (I included it in my list of Best Documentaries from the Last 5 Years.) Part charming family tale, part delectable foodie vision.

CHEF Despite being one of the most likable & lighthearted movies to come out in recent years, it is so hard to bring myself to rewatch Chef. Why? Because it is PAINFUL watching Jon Favreau whip up one scrumptious-looking creation after another. Roast pork belly, spicy octopus, ribeye steak, pasta and of course, the ridiculously good looking Cubano sandwiches. I legitimately salivate thinking about this film.

Okay, when’s lunch?
