double Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • Moms’ Night Out – This looks pretty damn awful. This wholesome Christian romp is about a few mothers who let their hair down to finally get out of the house for a night on the town. With some plot points that look pulled straight out of Date Night (the PG parts naturally), things go wrong. It doesn’t help that the fathers are terrible, helpless parents who have absolutely no idea how to care for their children in the most basic capacities. This looks so unfunny, so unoriginal, so painful. No interest here at all.
  • Neighbors – A full review will be up tomorrow, but having seen this I give it a positive recommendation. If you’re a fan of other Seth Rogen comedies… the raunchy, weed smoking brand that’s he’s come to be known for, this one fits right in the collection. Simply put, it’s hilarious.

  • The Double – Jesse Eisenberg stars in a dual role as a man who’s life becomes overtaken by his exact lookalike. It seems as though no one else recognizes this person as his doppelganger, even when they are right next to each other. The concept is very interesting, and despite the well tread concept of having a double, this looks really unique. The tone is a bit quirky which makes sense since Richard Ayoade wrote and directed. I’m really excited to check this out.

  • Devil’s Knot – This film tells the story of the West Memphis Three, specifically from the perspective of one of the murdered boy’s mothers (Reese Witherspoon) and the lawyer (Colin Firth) representing the three teens accused. I have watched many of the documentaries about this horrifying case, so this film almost feels like required viewing for me. However, I feel really apprehensive that it might come off as exploitative towards the people involved, especially if they take too many liberties with the story. Despite a good cast and rich story, it seems like it might be a little closer to a Lifetime feature than a great film. I’ll still try to check it out at some point just to see how it actually leans.

  • Chef – This just looks like a really light hearted fun film with a great cast. It’s about a chef who opens a food truck after his big break in the restaurant business fails. The food in the trailer alone looks so good… there’s no way someone could watch this and not get hungry. It’s gotten really great feedback so far, so I’m hoping to like it just as much as everyone else. It would also be pretty cool to see Jon Favreau make and star in a great film again.
