Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Burnt – A formerly prestigious chef gets a second chance to prove his craft in a London restaurant.
Directed by John Wells (August: Osage County)
Starring Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Daniel Brühl
Wow, has this movie had a shitload of advertising. I feel like I see a commercial for this in every block. Also, Cooper appeared on the TV show Limitless this week. Also, I saw cheese at the grocery store with a sticker on it advertising this movie. They must really believe in it to do such a push, or just really hope it can take Halloween weekend with all the people who don’t like fun. The movie itself doesn’t look bad, but I feel like Chef had a similar premise but a far more fun approach. I’m not sure the stakes of a world famous chef becoming world famous again are all that tantalizing. - Our Brand Is Crisis – A Bolivian presidential candidate hires an American political campaign strategist to help him when his election.
Directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express)
Starring Sandra Bullock, Billy Bob Thornton, Anthony Mackie, Joaquim de Almeida
You want to know how boss Bullock is? The lead role was written for a man and they changed it for her. It really goes to show how many films could easily be subverted to equalize the amount of female leads (uh, say Burnt for instance could easily be about a female chef and that instantly would have felt more fresh). This movie doesn’t look like it will be particularly entertaining unfortunately, but it also doesn’t look bad. It just banks on you latching onto this issue of a Bolivian election, and I’m not sure that will hook many. - Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse – Three boys must brave a zombie outbreak using their scout skills.
Directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones)
Starring Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller, Joey Morgan, Sarah Dumont, David Koechner
This doesn’t look all that exciting, and definitely a bit corny. According to Nate’s review my assumptions were fairly accurate. Read his review.
- Love – A sex-filled movie about an American entering an erotically charged romance with a Parisian he’s met abroad.
Directed by Gaspar Noé (Enter the Void)
Starring Aomi Muyock, Karl Glusman, Klara Kristin
This movie is apparently super graphic and it’s even filmed in 3D. Not sure I’ll get to see this in theaters, but I could definitely go for a home viewing when it’s available. The visuals look particularly interesting, but I’m also intrigued by the story line since the trailer doesn’t give too much away. To be honest though I should probably finally watch Enter the Void before I add this to my watch list.
