In an attempt to stick to our movie-related New Years resolutions, Jess and I plan to keep a weekly record of our progress towards our goal. See if we hit our goal this week and what movies we watched. You can also check out our initial resolutions post here.

My big goal this year is to watch three types of movies a week:

  • 1 New Movie (anything that has come out in the last 3-4 months)
  • 1 Movie From My Netflix Queue (it has to be from the list I cemented in stone at the beginning of 2014 to count)
  • 1 Movie I’ve Been Meaning to Rewatch

Lets take a look at what was watched this past week.

New Movies:

  • Slow West – Really gorgeous film with a simple plot that managed to surprise me a lot. Looked back at Will’s middling review of it and I have to say if I plugged in my numbers they’d be closer to 76%. Not one I’d soon revisit, but glad I watched it.
  • Trainwreck Definitely a funny movie due to Amy Schumer’s efforts, and not to mention Bill Hader who I just love. There’s definitely a few Judd Apatow emotional moments and heavy parts throughout that I would have probably just lifted out completely but they didn’t hurt the film overall. Other random thoughts: I love the casting of Schumer and Brie Larson as sisters and seeing Tilda Swinton in a role unlike any other I’ve seen her play.

Re-watched:

  • Scream 4 – Finished up my Scream rewatch in the same week that Wes Craven passed, which was really sad to hear. I really enjoyed re-watching all this movies over the past month and I love something special about each of them. I’d have to go with this order: Scream > Scream 4 > Scream 2 > Scream 3. This fourth installment is so much fun, and I love all the new elements they bring into it. That opening sequence is an all time favorite.
  • Side Effects – Check out our minisode on this out tomorrow! Soderbergh needs to end his pseudo-retirement.

Off the Queue:

  • Bronson – Finally caught this after hearing so much about it over the years, especially since most consider it Hardy’s breakthrough role. He’s fantastic in it, and I was very excited about this movie overall. Very cool visuals and storytelling.
  • Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels – Trying to knock off all my European movies before my upcoming trip to England. It’s incredible to see where Guy Ritchie started after just recently seeing his very Hollywood The Man From UNCLELock, Stock is super fun and I can see why everyone loves it so much. Can’t wait to check out Snatch next.

New Movies:

  • Get Hard – Breezy comedy that kept me laughing throughout. I was in a slump after I finished with all of the available episodes of Real Husbands of Hollywood so this flick filled my Kevin Hart void.
  • St. Vincent – Deeply enjoyed this. Full of great performances, genuine laughs and some deeply touching moments. I liked this even more than I expected.

Re-watched:

  • John Wick – I shouldn’t even be counting this here but I love this movie! Every time I rewatch it I find myself appreciating it a little more. Expect a ‘5 Favorite Things’ post in the near future.
  • Now You See Me – Watched this one against my will with a group that hadn’t seen it before. I didn’t have overly positive things to say about this my first go around but after a repeat watch I just flat out don’t like it. It’s not particularly well made and it isn’t as fun as it should be. I still can’t believe its getting a sequel.
  • Side Effects – Rewatched this for an upcoming mini episode of the podcast so be sure to check that out when it posts tomorrow.
