09.11.3Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • 90 Minutes in Heaven – A man survives a car crash in which he was pronounced dead only to return claiming heaven IS FOR REAL.
    Directed by Michael Polish
    Starring Kate Bosworth, Hayden Christensen
Oh dear, why is this happening? I don’t know about Christensen, but Bosworth deserves a better career than the one she has. At least better than this. It’s directed by her husband by the way. This is the SAME plot as that Greg Kinnear joint from last year, except no dumb kid. Looks equally as cheesy. I mean I don’t really care, but can’t someone at least try to make a halfway decent religiously themed movie? They all look like Hallmark channel made-for-tv movies.
  • The Perfect Guy – A recently single girl thinks that she’s made a major upgrade with her new love interest until things start getting creepy.
Directed by David M. Rosenthal (A Single Shot)
Starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Babe of the Week Morris Chestnut
This definitely has reminiscent shades of the Tyler Perry classic Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, however with the main object being thriller fun and not holy damnation and AIDS for all those who bang. It looks pretty sexy too, although that might just be Morris who I have not seen in much over the past many years. Doesn’t seem like required viewing, but I could definitely see myself watching it anyway.
  • The Visit – When two children are on a trip visiting their grandparents, it becomes apparent that something is horribly wrong.
Written & directed by M. Night Shyamalan
Starring Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, Kathryn Hahn
Could this be the Shyamalan comeback? I’m kind of hoping for the best, to be honest. It certainly has a creepy premise and also seems just a little campy (Grandma asking granddaughter to climb into the oven and all). If this is a fun horror watch I’ll be happy. Nathan’s review will be up tomorrow, but from what I gathered from his first impressions on social media, he was a fan.

  • Goodnight Mommy – Twin boys are worried that the woman under the cosmetic bandages isn’t actually their mother, at least the one they know.
Written & directed by Severin Fiala & Veronika Franz (directorial debut!)
Starring Susanne Wuest, Lukas Schwarz, Elias Schwarz
What a trailer! I am so ready to watch this at my first chance. It looks insanely weird, creepy, and freaky. The tension in the trailer alone is incredible. Foreign horror is really where it’s at. The concern with artistry and originality is far more apparent than in most American horror movies – at least when it comes to what’s out in theaters. I really hope this one lives up to expectations.
  • Sleeping With Other People – Two people who have issues with sex form a friendship where they promise to keep platonic.
Written & directed by Leslye Headland (Bachelorette)
Starring Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie, Natasha Lyonne, Amanda Peet, Adam Scott
I’m hoping this is dirtier and more R-rated than this cutesy trailer. It’s got a cute little indie song in the background and Brie dancing around with kids looking all cute. That’s not what I want! I want to hear some foul-mouthed dirty jokes! Especially coming from the woman behind Bachelorette. This all could just be making the marketing a bit nicer, but I am still hoping that it contains more raunchy fun than meets the eye. I’d love to see Sudeikis and Brie play off each other (and watch their characters fail at friendship and totally have sex leading to awkward feelings but ultimately love… probably involves someone running through the city at some point). I’ll wait to hear more word of mouth on this before I decide if it seems worth worrying about.
