The Best on DVD & BluRay
Spy
Who’s in it?
Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Jude Law, Curtis Jackson
What’s it about?
“Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.” – Fox
Nate’s Two Cents?
I actually went to see this movie with my feet firmly planted into the ground. I really didn’t expect much out of the movie because honestly, I don’t find Melissa McCarthy funny in the least bit. She’s typecast in in every movie and it’s the same jokes over and over. But to my surprise, I actually found the movie quite an enjoyable spy flick, even though I didn’t think it was funny. Overall it was a pretty cool action/spy flick worth checking out.

Poltergeist
Who’s in it?
Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris
What’s it about?
“Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (“Spiderman,” “Evil Dead”, “The Grudge”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.” – Fox
Nate’s Two Cents?
The original Poltergeist film used to scare the crap out of me when I was younger. The scene in the bathroom creeped me out to no end. I didn’t expect much when I saw that a remake was on the way, even with the casting of Sam Rockwell in the mix. The movie was just sort of blah, and far less interesting and creepy than its predecessor. It didn’t bring anything new or interesting besides an updated adaptation of the original story.

Cop Car
Who’s in it?
Kevin Bacon, Shea Whigman, Camryn Manheim, Hays Wellford, James Freedson-Jackson
What’s it about?
“Kevin Bacon (The Following, HBO’s Taking Chance, Mystic River) stars in director Jon Watts’ delightful throwback thriller Cop Car. When two good-natured but rebellious young boys (James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford) stumble across an abandoned cop car hidden in a secluded glade they decide to take it for a quick joyride. Their bad decision unleashes the ire of the county sheriff (Kevin Bacon) and leads to brutal consequences.” – Focus World

Someone at work told me about this film after seeing the trailer several months ago so I finally was able to sit down and check it out. It turned out to be a thrilling game of cat and mouse. Definitely worth checking out to see Bacon doing his thing and keeping it creepy, mustache and all.

What’s it about?
“When Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as they battle to save the planet from destruction at the hands of the villainous Ultron.” – Rotten Tomatoes
Nate’s Two Cents?
The second installment of Avengers finally arrives, on a day all by itself may I point out, since Disney likes to be different. The second film was a good watch, but I still enjoyed the first film a lot better. I just felt there was quite a bit packed into this movie and it sort of threw me out of it. But who knows, maybe I just need to give it another watch and I will change my mind.

Nate’s Two Cents?
Joe Swanberg is at it again with his latest 2013 Dramedy. It’s been awhile since I’ve actually sat down and watched the movie, but I remember really liking it. Everyone is great in the movie and Swanberg gets great performances out of his cast. The dynamic between Johnson and Wilde is great and they play off of each other very well. It’s also refreshing seeing Johnson not cracking jokes every other lines as a lot of his roles demand. If you’re looking for a good Rom-com/Drama on a night in, then you should for sure check out Drinking Buddies.
