Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron  – Our favorite superteam is back together in order to save the world. Again.
Directed by Joss Whedon (The Avengers)
Starring everyone you know & love
Possibly the most must-see movie of the year. I’m definitely excited to check out this follow up to the gloriously well-done The Avengers with Joss Whedon back at the helm. Even though Marvel is everywhere it’s hard to be that mad at it when you’re consistently getting entertaining blockbusters every few months. I’m hoping this one continues to build on the characters we’ve gotten to know so well and provides an entertaining villain in the form of James Spader’s creepy voice. Let’s be real though, as long as I get to watch RDJ execute some snappy one liners I’ll be pleased.

guide2

  • Welcome to Me – A woman with a mental imbalance uses her lottery winnings to star in her own talk show.
    Directed by  Shira Piven
Starring Kristen Wiig, James Marsden, Linda Cardellini, Wes Bentley
This looks like Wiig doing a a really weird funny SNL character, but twisting it on its head to show the back story behind the sketch. It’s not so silly and cheery, when the bizarre lady has issues. This looks like it could balance the serious and humor pretty well though. I’ve already seen Wiig prove herself dramatically, so this really does seem like the perfect blend of her capabilities.
  • Far From The Madding Crowd – A woman balances the affections of three suitors from totally different backgrounds.
Directed by  Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt)
Starring Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge
This looks serious as hell. I have no attachment to the original Thomas Hardy novel besides thinking the title is pretty cool sounding. The trailer doesn’t do much to pull me into the drama of this love square. There is promise of some nice performances and cinematography but I don’t know, it just looks boring. One detail that interests me is that it’s directed by the same man who made The Hunt which was spectacular. If he was next drawn to this project it could be more interesting than it’s letting on.
