STILL-2
In an attempt to stick to our movie-related New Years resolutions, Jess and I plan to keep a weekly record of our progress towards our goal. See if we hit our goal this week and what movies we watched. You can also check out our initial resolutions post here.

My big goal this year is to watch three types of movies a week:

  • 1 New Movie (anything that has come out in the last 3-4 months)
  • 1 Movie From My Netflix Queue (it has to be from the list I cemented in stone at the beginning of 2014 to count)
  • 1 Movie I’ve Been Meaning to Rewatch

Lets take a look at what was watched this past week.

New Movies:

  • Life Partners – I adored this movie. It was so funny and relatable. There were so many interactions where I found myself nodding or laughing, thinking “been there”. I think Leighton Meester and Gillian Jacobs are both great, so to see them together here was a treat.

Re-watched:

  • The House of Yes – I really have been wanting to re-watch this, mostly to share with my sister who I knew would get a kick out of it. It was even more enjoyable my second time through, picking up on so many more jokes and clever lines. Parker Posey is incredible in this.

Off the Queue:

  • Liberal Arts – This is one of those movies you don’t really need to see. It’s completely slight with no big takeaway, but I certainly didn’t hate it as I was watching it. I thought Josh Radnor was nice enough and Elizabeth Olsen is just wonderful in everything. I’m not sure Radnor had a whole movie in mind when he wrote this though… I think he had a solid base idea and then kept adding other characters and situations in order to hit 90 minutes. And it could have easily lost a lot of those minutes and it wouldn’t have hurt. There is a great scene though in which Radnor is writing Olsen letters in a montage sequence while listening to classic music that stood out.

New Movies:

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron – Super fun with some minor nitpicks. Full review will be up tomorrow.
  • Ex Machina – Stellar sci fi thriller that challenges you and stays in your head long after watching it. One of the best movies about A.I. ever & includes one of my favorite scenes of the year.

Re-watched:

  • Gravity – Still a thrilling experience that is so technically marvelous it hurts. I was weary that this wouldn’t hold up as well on a second watch but clearly I needed to place more faith in Alfonso Cuaron.

Off the Queue:

  • The Family – I threw this on my queue for a throwaway option and it lived up to those expectations. Its one of those ‘put this on while you’re cleaning’ type films. It’s a bit of a tonal jumble but it’s an innocent watch.
