Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- The Pyramid – This is the closest we have to a wide release this weekend. I have no clue why nothing substantial is coming out. This might be the double feature no one asked for but might be a fine enough evening of the avid horror movie consumer with As Above/So Below. Both are about a team that discovers some scary shit under an ancient burial ground – this time it’s a pyramid. It looks like there’s yet again some The Descent vibes coming out of this trailer, with the creepy humanoids (mummies?) lurking in the shadows. This does not seem like something good enough to see in theaters, and that’s probably why it’s had little to no advertising.
- Wild – I can’t pinpoint exactly why, but I am really looking forward to this movie. I’m not a particularly big fan by any means, but I have no problem with Reese Witherspoon. I’m not exactly sure why some do. I know post Walk the Line her career has stalled a bit with some not great projects, but don’t you people remember Tracy Flick? Anyway, I don’t know how much of it was Beck’s “Turn Away” in the trailer, but I am just feeling it. It’s like the really rough and tumble version of Eat, Pray, Love. It’s got the director of Dallas Buyers Club and the screenplay is adapted by the wonderful Nick Hornby. Well, this seems like an Oscar watch for sure, so I plan to see it at some point.
Playing in select theaters. - Comet – Justin Long and Emmy Rossum star in this little indie. It’s got an very intriguing trailer that sets up some mind-bending story elements that you wouldn’t expect to find in what boils down to a romantic dramedy. It’s got some Eternal Sunshine vibes, but I certainly am not building my expectations up to that level. If it’s interesting, original, and sells a convincing coupling that’s all I’d ask of it. Seems like a perfect movie for a lazy afternoon, which doesn’t sound like the most shining endorsement but sometimes that is exactly what you need.
Playing in select theaters and available on VOD. - Life Partners – This movie is right up my alley. Not only am I such a Leighton Meester cheerleader (seriously, how the hell does Blake Lively have a better career than her?), but I love Gillian Jacobs too. So many moments in this trailer reminded me of the repartee I share with my best friend Lindsay (you may have heard of her). Thank goodness we both already have boyfriends and don’t have to go through the awkward friend transition that Life Partners is about – the inevitable shift of attention from best friend to boyfriend. It’s such a complex dynamic that I think would make a good film, especially between likeable leads. Plus Adam Brody is in this. I’m so there.
