obvious  Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • The Fault in Our Stars – Like many others, I have read and adored John Green’s novel that this movie is adapted from. It’s incredibly heartbreaking but it’s also funny and eloquent. It gives you every reason to be sad and hate how cruel the world can be, but also affirms why life is so precious without being sappy. I was able to see this movie already, and I can say that fans of the book should be happy with the adaptation. It’s very faithful to the source material, while owning the characters and stories on its own, so you don’t need to know the book’s version to fully appreciate who they are and what’s happening to them. There will be a full review up tomorrow, but I definitely recommend this one.
  • Edge of Tomorrow – And if you prefer going to the movies to have a fun action-filled story versus crying your eyes out, this seems like a great option. Keeping up the string of well done action fare, Edge of Tomorrow sounds like a winner. The idea of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt facing the same mission over and over hoping to get better results and defeat their enemies reminds me of some other movies like Source Code. The fact that it’s based around fighting an alien race instead of stopping an exploding train makes it all the more exciting. Based on all the positive buzz going around, I want to check this out.

  • Obvious Child – As I’ve told Rob on at least 5 occasions to remind him what this movie is, it’s the one starring Jean Ralphio’s sister from Parks and Rec and Plop from The Office. It’s about a struggling standup comedian played by Jenny Slate, who becomes pregnant after a one night stand. This seems to be the topper on a list of why she’s generally a hot mess. She decides to get an abortion, and thus the movie plays out. Considering my biggest experiences with abortion in the media are the horrifying scare in Dirty Dancing and wanting to cry while listening to “Brick” by Ben Folds Five (plus a handful of ones in TV shows), I’m anticipating seeing exactly how it’s handled here. Even without that factor though the trailer is funny and cute so I’d like to check this out.
See where it’s playing in theaters here.
  • Willow Creek – This found footage horror film has some cred, being the horror debut from eclectic actor and director Bobcat Goldthwait. If it wasn’t for him and the good reviews it’s gotten from its tour of various festivals, it would really blend into the masses and probably end up on the horror category of Netflix instant watch without a second thought. The trailer doesn’t give you much of interest beyond your standard found footage fare. It’s about a couple who are filming their trip while camping in a park where there was a reported Bigfoot sighting. Whether Bigfoot is the real enemy here or some disgruntled townies remains to be seen. I’m willing to give it a shot, but no real expectations with this one.
    Available through Video on Demand.
