Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Oldboy – If I hadn’t already seen and loved Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy several times by now, this would definitely interest me. The story appears to be interesting, I like Josh Brolin, adore Elizabeth Olsen and want to see Sharlto Copley in anything. There’s just that nagging feeling that this is going to be a cheap knock off. The fact that it held off on screening for critics and then debuted in the past couple days with a rotten score doesn’t help matters much. I wouldn’t be against checking it out, but it’s not really convincing at the moment.
- Homefront – This film certainly gives off a Straw Dogs remake vibe (maybe it’s Kate Bosworth) and the fact that Jason Statham and James Franco are sharing the screen is interesting, but this really looks like a throwaway. It could be fun, it could be harmless, but it definitely could wait to be viewed at home.
- Black Nativity– Oh geez, this is really not for me. I must say, I might not be the person this is marketed to for many reasons… the biggest being that it is a gospel musical. It’s based on a Langston Hughes play but I’m still not biting. I’m sure that it’s probably a great holiday film to go as a family if you’re into that sort of thing.
- Frozen – Doesn’t this look cute? I guess… I’m not a big fan of kids movies and that snowman looks super corny, but hey my girl Kristen Bell is in it and that alone makes me want to round up my youngest cousin to have an excuse to check this out (when it comes out on DVD).
- Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom – This looks like a very history focused biopic… maybe a little too straightforward. But all you really have to know is that Idris Elba is starring. That alone makes this worth the watch. It seems like he’s also the main reason to see it, although Nelson Mandela is certainly a worthy subject. I just have a feeling this might be more popular in high school world history classes.
