catching Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

  wide

  • The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – Even if you were sort of lukewarm approaching the release to this Hunger Games sequel, it’s become tough to ignore the praise that’s been coming out so far. It seems to universally be considered an improvement on the first, and having liked that movie quite a bit I’ve started to get very excited for Catching Fire. The game described in the novel is sure to be far more cinematic than the ordinary forrest from the first. I’m excited to check out the new characters, especially Jena Malone as Johanna. Hopefully this lives up to expectations.
  • Delivery Man – A few weeks ago, the FTS crew sat down for Clay Pigeons. I was pretty astounded by how awesome Vince Vaughn was as the very off Lester Long. Where is that in his current career? I’m sure the potential is still here, but I guess he’s become satisfied with doing terrible throwaway comedies. Except Vaughn definitely can’t be making Sandler money, so why stoop to that level? In fairness, the trailer doesn’t seem THAT awful. It’s a somewhat original conceit (sperm donor tracks down kids to find some purpose in his life) but it just looks lackluster. Vaughn seems barely there, and the laughs are certainly not coming through. Do better, Vaughn. I believe in you.

  • Philomena – Short and simple – this is one of the best films this year. Judi Dench and Steve Coogan make for a great little pairing in a film that balances their humorous partnership with an extraordinary and devastating true life story. We’ll have a review up Friday but this gets a firm recommendation from me.
