Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
I have literally ZERO expectations for this new Vince Vaughn joint. I mean conceptually, a story about a guy that unknowingly birthed hundreds of kids from his sperm donations COULD be funny (and apparently critically acclaimed if you’re the Canadian film Starbuck that runs off a similar concept) But there just isn’t anything exciting in the promotion for Delivery Man. Instead, just stay home and watch the 80s comedy Mr. Mom. It stars Michael Keaton as a stay at home dad struggling with maintaining the household, children and his ego. It’s familiar territory that many a sitcom has treaded before but it’s a fun movie with a likeable lead.

Instead of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, watch: Hanna
I’m sure most of the movie going population will be checking out Catching Fire which begs the question, why didn’t Delivery Man run against Best Man Holiday instead? But if you aren’t ready to give The Hunger Games a try and you’re looking for something a bit different from the normal blockbuster fare, take a look at the 2011 film Hanna. Starring supreme young talent Saoirse Ronan as the title character, the movie follows the young girl trained to be assassin as she sets out on a journey in search for her first big target. It’s a wonderfully acted coming of age tale that boasts impressive visuals and a totally boss soundtrack. It’s a must see.

Breaking Bad: The Complete Series
Whether you were a fan with the beyond impressive series or you were living under a rock and are totally new to it, the Breaking Bad box set could be the most rewarding purchase of 2013. There isn’t enough room here to gush about how superior this TV series is so I’ll just say that it may be the greatest television drama of all time. There are plenty of special features included in the box set so don’t hesitate on picking this up today. [Buy it on Amazon] / [Breaking Bad: The Complete Series trailer]
You might have already heard me talk about Hot Coffee on my feature Coffee Break which you can read here. This documentary is a surprising look at various aspects of the civil legal system and how corporate interest and big business can control legal proceedings that were once set in place to protect us. Whether you’re into this sort of thing or not, Hot Coffee should be an essential documentary for all US citizens concerned about their legal rights.
Hot Coffee Netflix Synopsis: This documentary examines the so-called “hot coffee lawsuit” in which a woman sued McDonald’s after she spilled her coffee and burned herself, specifically looking at the reasons why the fast-food giant invested heaps of money to sway public opinion.
