Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit a home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of Dark Shadows: Tremors
The connection is a little rough here between Tremors and Dark Shadows, but I figured that if you were looking for a little scare based fun, Tremors might be a good place to start. I wouldn’t classify the film as family friendly right off the bat but when it comes down to it, the movie should be suitable for most viewers. Tremors is a silly movie that has achieved inexplicable cult status over the years, even spawning several sequels. It’s a really enjoyable experience to watch Tremors with a group and share a few laughs.
Chronicle
As far as new releases go, The Grey could have easily made the pick this week but instead I chose a film cut from a different cloth. Chronicle was a surprise hit from earlier this year, directed by Josh Trank and written bu Max Landis (who continues to do awesome stuff.) Even though this is another entry among the countless others in the ‘found footage’ genre craze, Chronicle utilizes some interesting techniques to make it feel fresh. The film is part comedy, part drama, part adventure and a decent character study as well. There is a nice balance among the characters in the film and within the short running time the movie is able to give us some real conflict.
World’s Greatest Dad (2009)
With Bobcat Goldhwait’s God Bless America making the rounds I thought I’d recommend his previous film World’s Greatest Dad for this week’s Instant Watch pick. WGD is one of those perfect dark comedies that toes the line of comedy and drama stupendously. Backed up by a creative premise and hilarious cast, the film isn’t perfect but is an overall success. Take a look at the synopsis and see if you may want to check it out.
Pet Sematary Netflix Synopsis: After his son (Daryl Sabara) dies in an awkward freak accident, high school poetry teacher Lance (Robin Williams) ghostwrites a suicide note to spare the family embarrassment. But when the note becomes an unexpected hit, Lance sees a chance to resurrect his writing career. In a bid for literary fame, Lance writes his son’s journal and passes it off as his own. Writer-director Bob Goldthwait’s comedy debuted at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
