Rob and Lindsay list off some of the most annoying kids ever to appear in feature films. So this holiday season, just be happy you don’t have to buy gifts for any of these scamps.
1. Isabelle in Brothers
Rob: Isabelle’s character seems as though the only reason she is in the movie is to further the drama. She doesn’t come across as a good character. The drama her character creates is abundantly apparent in the dinner scene. There’s a lot of awkward tension, not only because the scene is awkward but because the performance seems forced out of her. And while she is sitting there with the balloon during the scene she doesn’t even seem interested in the shot, she just seems like she’s doing what the director is telling her to do. She also slightly over acts that scene as well, but this is something a lot of kids would probably do.
Lindsay: This entry is one me and Rob actually disagree on. While I do think the character Isabelle is very annoying in Brothers, I think that Bailee Madison is outstanding. That little chick can change emotions at the drop of a dime, and displayed some truly remarkable talent in this film especially. With that being said, didn’t you just want to smack her right in the face during the pivotal dinner scene in the film?
2. Anne & Charles Stewart in The Others
Rob: These kids have it a little harder than the rest because they are playing a role that’s a that might be harder to grasp. Other kids on the list are playing modern kids. These kids have to play time period roles. Also, I feel like they never really expose kids to the full effects of horror movies so it’s a harder for them to act accordingly. That being said, the kids do seem snivelly. The characters whine and complain in a way that makes you care less about them staying safe. I suppose due to the fact they are photosensitive you are suppose to sympathize with them. However, they are so whiny and abrasive that it makes you sympathize more with Nicole Kidman’s character for having to be their mom.
3. Aidan in The Ring
Rob: David Dorfman has gone on to roles in Drillbit Taylor, Anger Management (which is the being of the deep spiral of Adam Sandler’s career), and My Boss’s Daughter. He should probably just focus on commercials and be done with it. In The Ring he seems to just be reading through the lines and doesn’t really add much to the film. Like he is kind of out of it the whole movie. Also, his name is Aidan.
Lindsay: Aidan is the worst. Those blank stares, oddly advanced dialogue and creepy adult mannerisms. It makes you question if it’s really a kid or an grown actor with some sort of dwarfism. In line with being creepy, he certainly gets the job done, but I wouldn’t want to hang out with the kid for more than a few minutes.
4. Boy in The Road
Rob: Dude, this kid is so dreary. I suppose its good that he was able to portray the feelings that someone in that scenario would be feeling, but it feels like he’s going through this on the set. Its like he had no desire to be filming this movie. As for the character, it’s very annoying to see him rely so heavily on his father, even as his father becomes deathly ill. In that situation you would expect a lot more out of your son and this kid just seemed like a burden.
Lindsay: I remember specifically how much Rob hated this kid. It’s strange though, the actor playing ‘the boy’, Kodi-Smit MecPhee, received some overwhelmingly positive praise for the film and became a very sought after young star. But yes the character in the movie does border annoying for much of the running time.
5. Rachel Ferrier in War of the Worlds
Lindsay: This wouldn’t be a list of annoying child movie characters if Rachel Ferrier didn’t pop up. While actress Dakota Fanning has most definitely proved herself a true actress from a young age, her character in War of the Worlds is universally remembered for her hysterics. For much of the film’s running time, Rachel is crying, panicking and of course SCREAMING HER LUNGS OUT. All this would be pretty understandable for any young kid in an apocalyptic alien invasion scenario, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to blow my brains out.
6. Andy Barclay in Child’s Play
Rob: This kid literally distracted me from the whole film. I usually tell people I don’t like Child’s Play and I think the reason is because of this character. The role is so bratty and over acted that I was rooting for Chucky through the movie. I think I kinda got the feeling that this kid was shoved into the movie by his parents and that he didn’t really want to be in it on his own. I guess what I’m saying is this kid doesn’t really seem to have the chops to be an actor. According to wikipedia, he’s an engineer now. So, I guess that’s a good thing.
