Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of Elysium: District 9
Elysium isn’t a perfect movie, but it’s ok. For a more in-depth review of the film, check out my review of it here. Now I don’t know about you, but when I go to the theaters I want to see something a little more compelling than ‘ok’. Stay home and watch Neil Blomkamp’s better movie, District 9. District 9 is full of all great things you were hoping to see in Elysium and didn’t get.
Instead of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
I love the fact that the Percy Jackson franchise is trying to get kids into Greek Mythology. It’s full of great source material that you can do tons with. If you can’t make it to the theaters to to catch the latest Percy Jackson, stay home and watch the second film in the Harry Potter series, Chamber of Secrets. Of all the Potter films, Chamber of Secrets ranks as one of my favorites, all major exposition happens in the first movie which helps you dive into the world of Harry Potter even more. I still find myself going back and watching this one a lot.
Instead of We’re the Millers, watch :Meet the Applegates
I must say, judging by my various social media timelines, We’re the Millers is a pretty funny movie. The movie is full of comedy heavy-hitters so for it not to be funny would take an act of God or a really really shitty script. IF you can’t catch the hilarity that We’re The Millesr is offering, grab your favorite seat on the couch and watch Meet The Applegates. Meet The Applegates is a quirky comedy from the early 90’s about a family of giant Amazonian ants (yes, you read that correctly) that take human form to sabotage a nuclear powerplant to save the rain forest. Both films feature a families that aren’t really what they appear to be.
Olympus Has Fallen
I gotta tell you, I have the damnedest of times trying to keep this movie separate from White House Down. But this one has Aaron Eckhart as the President and Gerard Butler as the secret service agent with a past. Seems like a solid action flick and is worth a look.
Orange Is The New Black (2013)
Look, Netflix is coming to snatch the scalps of these networks with their quality programming. House of Cards was a runaway hit (I mean they sell the shit on dvd for losers people who don’t have Netflix), Hemlock Grove was good, Arrested Development was homerun, and now we have Orange Is The New Black. Y’all, I started watching this show about 24 hours before writing this post and I’m already 4 episodes in. If you loved (the first few seasons of) Weeds on Showtime then you’re gonna fall for Orange Is The New Black.
