Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.

Instead of Olympus Has Fallen: Air Force One
Rather than watch Antoine Fuqua direct Gerard Butler in a film where he’ll talk out the side of his mouth (and hopefully Spartan kicks a terrorist) watch the President (Harrison Ford) defend himself as he throws terrorists off his plane!

Instead of Admission: Accepted
Accepted shows you how great your life can be when you don’t listen to an Admissions Department and you create your own college. This film is hilarious with fantastic performances by all involved (minus Blake Lively) and if you haven’t seen it yet, go see a doctor to find out what’s wrong with you, then find it and watch it. Once you watch it, comment on this post telling me how much more complete your life feels. You’re welcome good friend, you’re welcome.

Instead of The Croods: Ice Age
I think personified animals exploring new worlds is much more hilarious a premise than prehistoric people exploring a new world. The original Ice Age is worth a chuckle or two and reminds us how solid a movie it is before all the lesser sequels.

Instead of Spring Breakers: Sugar and Spice
Now, I have never seen this movie, but the plots of these two feel related. Spring Breakers is about these girls on spring break who get arrested, then sprung out of jail by a drugs and guns dealer. He then enlists their help and they live a life of crime (or so suggest the synopsis and trailer on IMDB). Sugar and Spice is about a cheerleader who gets pregnant and finds herself living a life of crime to support her child and lifestyle. Either way, both movies have young girls (most likely in cheerleading outfits and/or bikinis) robbing banks and living the age old Cyndi Lauper adage: “Girls, they want to have fun… oh girls just want to have fun.”

Killing Them Softly (2012)
Now, of all the new releases, this film is the most worth checking out. It’s very down the middle, you’ll either love it or hate it, but regardless of how you feel, technically, the film is impressive. Great cinematography, great camera work, and some solid special effects. The story is about these two guys who rob a poker game. Brad Pitts character is brought in to kill them. Instead, he recommends James Gandolfini’s character, but he’s having an existential-mid-life-crisis-break-down. Leaving no choice, Brad goes to work, performing his job as a hitman. Now, where this film falls apart is when it tries to pair the story with the economic collapse back in 2008-2009. The message and theme gets mixed up and the film can be muddled. ALL of that said, it’s worth checking out this week whether you buy it flat out or go through Netflix or VOD

House of Cards (2012)

This is a no brainer. It’s been around for a month but if you’re one of those hold outs or the last to see this show, get on with it!!! The show is the best possible mix of The West Wing and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and it keeps you intrigued from beginning to end. Seriously, stop reading this and go watch it!!

House of Cards Netflix Synopsis: A ruthless Congressman, Francis Underwood, and his ambitious wife Claire, will stop at nothing to conquer everything. This wicked political drama slithers through the back halls of greed, sex, love and corruption in modern D.C.

What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
