The recent horror anthology film The ABCs of Death was interesting enough even though it was often a too far off base for me personally. The sequel was announced recently and only a few directors spark any recognition from me but it does seem that the follow up is expanding beyond horror directors. The trailer released for Spike Lee’s remake of the classic Oldboy was far from unimpressive. But it seems that the original film’s director Park Chan-wook wasn’t super keen on the idea of someone retelling the story again. I feel like its been years since I first heard all the rumors about the Suspiria remake and about David Gordon Green’s involvement. Director: Mark Waters / Stars: Olga Kurylenko, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry
Look, I’m not really into vampires and I’m never ever aware of these popular book series that are continuously developed into films. All that aside, this trailer isn’t terrible. For it’s demo audience, I think it actually looks fairly intriguing. There isn’t a whole lot of plot to been seen in this teaser trailer but that’s probably a good thing.
Director: Steven C. Miller / Stars: Jonny Weston, Gattlin Griffith, Peter Holden
Oh boy. This trailer somehow got even sillier as it went on. Visually, I have nothing to complain about and truthfully, even the acting appeared to be serviceable. My worry is that the concept (literally a monster under the bed) will never be able to flesh out any believable/truly scary scenarios.
Director: BJ McDonnell / Stars: Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Zach Galligan
For starters, I’m sure it’s not a very good sign that I don’t remember much from the last Hatchet film other than generally being unenthused. The trailer for Hatchet 3 appears to be more of the same antics as our main baddie Crowley is still tearing people to bloody pieces in the swamp land. The video shows off too many of the kills for my liking. If I’m being honest, I’ll probably end up watching this anyways because I’m a sucker for horror franchises.
Director: Vincenzo Natali / Stars: Abigail Breslin, Sarah Manninen, David Hewlett
This is one of those “this doesn’t look half bad” but doesn’t look very good either type films. I actually really like Abigail Breslin (I thought she was great in The Call) but I worry that this project will be quickly forgotten. Conceptually it’s got me, but the trailer as a whole doesn’t promise anything too memorable.
Director: James Wan / Stars: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins
Nothing about this trailer is too spectacular or surprising but with James Wan’s track record I definitely don’t need it too be. I’ve noted elsewhere how impressed I am with Wan as a director and I’ll be looking to Insidious 2 to confirm his status. It will be interesting to see if he can match the pulse pounding notes of the original while still giving the audience something new to chew on. Also, I’m glad to see that the same cast is returning.
