#05 /You’re Next
This little indie film from out of nowhere succeeds not through anything particularly revolutionary but by perfectly executing a simple idea. Part home invasion flick, part revenge tale, You’re Next is a little creepy, a little funny, gory and stylish. It will have you cheering from your seat and bopping your head to its unofficial theme song. – Lindsay
#04 / Sinister
This is a truly creepy film, I would wager it’s one of the most universally scary films of the past 5 years. A struggling writer moves his family into the former home of a murdered family and soon finds a box of films depicting several grisly murder scenes with a common thread. As things start happening to his family, the story grows infinitely more frightening. This is a solid film all around, that will send chills down the spine of even the most hardcore horror buff. – Will
#03 / The Conjuring
When The Conjuring came out, director James Wan was still riding high off of the success of Insidious. The popularity of that film might have spelled disaster for his follow up, a movie about a husband and wife paranormal research team that sets out to save a family from the ghost of a witch. Wan pulled it off, however, and now he has two of the best horror films of the last few decades under his belt. Wan crammed a lot of spooky material into The Conjuring, including his signature love for creepy dolls, and it paid off. The film’s already had it’s own creepy doll spin off film, Annabelle, and a sequel – The Enfield Poltergeist – is set for next year. – Robert
#02 / Insidious
God bless James Wan for making horror movies scary again. I can’t remember the last time a movie scared me as much as Insidious did, it struck a perfect balance between story, tension, and jump scares. To this very day Insidious
.is a horror movie that I’ve only seen once. I understand that Wan doesn’t want to be pegged as being only a director of Horror flicks, but man……he’s got the gift. – Marc
#01 / The Cabin in the Woods
This isn’t simply my favorite horror movie of the last few years. It’s pretty high up there on my list of all-time favorites, mainly because it is a perfect homage to the genre as a whole, playing on conventions and tropes from final girls to creepy creatures that vary across cultures. It’s hilarious and horrific and ruthlessly smart. This is satirical, referential filmmaking– horror or otherwise– at its greatest. – Sara
