Honorable Mention: Magic Mike
I’m not sure Magic Mike falls squarely under the Comedy genre but it still earned it’s place in the honorable mention spot. I wasn’t expecting to have as much fun watching the crew in Magic Mike as I did. There’s an exchange in the movie where Cody Horn’s character Paige says to Mike (Channing Tatum) “I was hoping this was all a joke.” Mike responds with “It is pretty funny.” That’s a lot of the fun associated with the movie. Beyond the abs and buns on display, it’s really just a ludicrous form of entertainment, that like like the movie, is harmless fun. -Lindsay
#5. Killer Joe
Killer Joe, as a comedy, is about as dark as you can get. It’s premise is dark, it’s delivery is dark, and the situations the characters find themselves in are dark, but it’s one of the funniest films I’ve seen in a long time. A lot of it is attributed to it’s ensemble cast, but the stand out is Matthew McConaughey giving easily one of his best performances ever. He terrified me, he made me laugh, and he made me think twice about chicken. -Nick
#4. This Is 40
I loved this film. This movie manages to make being a middle-aged parent relatable to literally everyone, even a single 20-something from Baltimore. There are more than a few scenes that will have you laughing out loud but looking back on the film you remember it being non-stop laughs. The film couples this great comedy with a solid storyline that is at it’s best, touching. -Will
#3. Silver Linings Playbook
It’s hard to find a Hollywood romantic film that isn’t deemed a “chick flick”. It’s even harder to find one that features tour de force performances by its two leads. Good thing there is David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook to make it a reality. This isn’t just one of the best comedies or romances of the year, but one of the best films. It’s impossible not to laugh at Pat and Tiffany just being their crazy, offbeat selves as they deal with their personal issues while their friendship builds. On top of the humor created by the two leads, there’s the whole subject of the Eagles and sports fans in general. This is a layered comedy that’s easy for anyone to enjoy and undoubtedly crack up nonstop during. -Jess
#2. Ted
Ted was written and directed by Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy and American Dad. The movie shares a lot of its humor with those shows, so if you enjoy either of them chances are you will also enjoy watching Ted. Even if you aren’t familiar with MacFarlane’s television work, you will probably still get a kick out of this foul-mouthed Teddy Bear. The movie is packed with jokes and Mark Wahlberg is a fantastic comedic actor. -Rob
#1. 21 Jump Street
I must say, when I heard that Hollywood was going to make a 21 Jump Street movie I was less than enthused. Boy was I wrong. Absolutely everything worked for 21 Jump Street; they took the concept of the TV show in a new and hilarious direction, made little connections to the source material, had great writing, and the on-screen chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum was a hit. Seriously, I had no idea that CT was that funny, he should do more comedy in the future. 21 Jump Street was the comedy that no one saw coming and it deserves to be #1. -Marc
