Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. In this weekly film guide, I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
WIDE RELEASES
Directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines)
Starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz
After his first two efforts, Cianfrance is definitely a director I’m going to be following. His intimate, beautiful style is really captivating. I think that it would work perfectly with a premise like this. He’s already demonstrated how well he can capture relationship strife. Adding in the talent of the two leads and I’m sold. Knowing how sad his other two movies were, I’m prepared for this to be quite emotionally heavy as well. Check out Nick’s review where he has mostly positive remarks with the worst detractor being the slow pace of this long movie.
Directed by Luke Scott (directorial debut!)
Starring Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rose Leslie, Toby Jones, Jennifer Jason Leigh
So you know how the premise of Jurassic Park is that group of people are determining if it’s legally reasonable to pursue this whole dinosaur amusement park they already produced? Well, this is kinda like that but it’s just Kate Mara, and instead of an amusement park it’s an AI who’s abilities are accelerating and has been violent. Mara gets sent there to investigate but of course it all goes wrong because Morgan is so advanced. It seems like it’s going for a much more horror-thriller vibe than psychological like Ex Machina but it could still be fun. One interesting factor is that Morgan is played by Anya Taylor-Joy who was last super impressive in my favorite movie of 2016 The Witch. This probably isn’t worth seeing in theaters when Don’t Breathe just came out, but I would throw it on during a movie night.
