Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

  • Gods of Egypt – Two god bros duke it out for power over Egypt.
Directed by Alex Proyas (Knowing, I, Robot)
Starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gerard Butler, Brenton Thwaites, Courtney Eaton
What garbage. This make Exodus: Gods and Kings look legitimate. When you see a trailer this laughable you have to think how none of the hundreds of people who were involved in the process of making this movie ever thought this would turn out well. I feel like the intended audience is guys in button up dragon shirts. No matter how good looking Nikolaj is (and how much I love saying his name), no thank you. I do quite like this review though.
  • Eddie the Eagle – True story of the Olympic ski jumper Eddie Edwards.
Directed by Dexter Fletcher (Sunshine on Leith)
Starring Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman, Christopher Walken, Tom Costello Jr.
Glad to see Taron Edgerton getting work after his breakout performance in Kingsman last year. He was such a loveable street youth and it’s cool to see him already breaking out of what could’ve been a typecast with this new role. This movie is a feel good sports movie without all the schmaltz of the Disney produced features that come out a couple times a year (and does anyone actually see them?). It just seems like an interesting, random story about somewhat of a weirdo with lots of heart. Nick saw it and said it’s quite enjoyable. Not sure I’d rush to theaters, but I’d catch it at home for sure.
  • Triple 9 – A plan to kill a cop in order to achieve a grand heist goes awry.
Directed by John Hillcoat (Lawless, The Road)
Starring Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet
From the cast to the trailer, this crime thriller seems like one of those movies that could not go wrong. The genre is totally up my alley so I plan to watch this regardless (I mean Kate Winslet makes me want to see it enough on her own), but the lukewarm response hasn’t been very exciting. Nick wrote a review where he had praises and an overall a positive response, but this isn’t going to be the stand out feature that I think most believed it could be on paper.

  • Darby Forever – A fabric store employee experiences escapist fantasies during her workday.
Directed by Osmany Rodriguez (SNL and other TV work)
Starring Aidy Bryant, Natasha Lyonne, Retta
I still am a fan of Saturday Night Live despite all the grief it gets for being a shell of its old self (pretty sure people have been saying the same thing about every cast for decades, depending on who you ask). There are so many star talents on the cast right now, and Aidy Bryant is one of my favorite. She’s so vibrant and always stands out to me. She recently partnered with Vimeo to make a short film and it’s now available for download. I’ll definitely have to check this out soon.
