#05 / “Night Vision in the Tunnel” Sicario
Remember how terrifying the showdown between Clarice Starling and Buffalo Bill was in Silence of the Lambs? Take that, add some breathless intensity and multiply it. Throw in a driving score from Johann Johannsson and it might come close to what you feel during this scene. I’ve never seen a descent into darkness (literal and metaphorical) so gorgeous yet so terrifying in the same breath. What’s even scarier than the revelations made in this scene are what’s to come afterwards. This scene alone is worth the price of admission. – Nick
#04 / “Marquis Warren’s Monologue” The Hateful Eight
Quentin Tarantino has always been known for his ability to write amazing dialogue for his casts, and this time around is no different. One character in particular though steals the show towards the end of the first portion of the film, before the amazing pee break..I mean intermission. Marquis Warren (Samuel L Jackson) delivers what has to be one of the most memorable monologues in film history, or at least it will be once you see it. In a confrontation with General Smithers Warren explains how he knew his son and exactly how he was there when he died. Now if you’re trying to get someone to pull a gun on you, then telling them you forced their son to walk several miles naked through the snow and then force him to perform oral sex on your “big black pecker” before killing him will surely do the job. The “path of a righteous man” speech was once my favorite from Jackson, but I think this one takes the cake. – Nate
#03 / “The Church” Kingsman: Secret Service
When you look at the chapter guide for Kingsmen this scene it aptly titled “The Massacre”, that tells you all you need to know. Colin Firth plays a British secret agent that must fight his way out of a church full of parishioners-turned-murdering-horde by villain Samuel L. Jackson. This scene has some of the most creative fight choreo I’ve seen since The Raid, and by far is the coolest thing Colin Firth has done. Ever. – Marc
#02 / “THE WHOLE DAMN MOVIE” Mad Max: Fury Road
Mad Max: Fury Road begins in an oasis in the middle of a desert in a post apocalyptic world running out of water and gets even more interesting from there. The entire movie is a giant car chase with heavily modified semi trucks and hot rods. Combine that action with acrobatic stunts and the artistic visions of director George Miller and Mad Max: Fury Road never stops delivering amazing scenes. The film cannot be reduced to just one. – Rob
#01 / “Dance Break” Ex Machina
“After a long day of Turing tests, you gotta unwind”. This line tells you literally everything you need to know about the dance scene in Ex-Machina. It’s one of the most hilarious, unsuspected and absurd dance scenes in any movie. Its placement in the movie is spot on and if you didn’t suspect Oscar Isaac’s character to be absolutely nuts yet – you will now. Like everything else in this movie, this scene is visually breathtaking; the red lights, the gorgeous Asian robot (actress?)… And the disco music! An essential part of any great musical scene in the films of our time. Now excuse me, I need to learn how to pull of that Oscar Isaac hip swing. – Mette
