Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – Based on the novel that re-imagined Jane Austen’s classic romance with the twist of a zombie attack.
Directed by Burr Steers (Charlie St. Cloud, 17 Again)
Starring Lily James, Sam Riley, Jack Huston, Bella Heathcote, Charles Dance
The first trailer for this looked like kind of campy fun. The idea seemed so unique back when it hit book shelves. Lindsay gave it to me as a Christmas present a few years back and I’ve had it on hold til I read the original Pride and Prejudice so I would, ya know, really get how it was revised. I should have known that was not going to happen anytime soon and just head straight for the action version. Unfortunately the second trailer gave it a more serious tilt, and I just hope that was them not knowing how to market it. I think if they go full force with making it fun and tongue-in-cheek it could be good, but they might have a hard time hitting that mark. - Hail, Caesar! – A man in Hollywood is tasked with keeping the biggest stars in order, when one of the biggest is kidnapped.
Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen (Inside Llewyn Davis, True Grit)
Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum
One of my most anticipated movies of the year simply based on that awesome trailer. I love sillier Coen Brothers movies and this just looks like a whole lot of fun. The cast is really freaking great and there’s so many small moments in the trailer (Channing Tatum’s exaggerated head move) that just sold me off the bat. We might have a discouraging review on the site from Nick, who told me that he did not care for it, however he not only doesn’t like No Country for Old Men but neither Fargo nor Burn After Reading as well. I just don’t trust him, but if you agree with those assessments you might be aligned with him. It has a respectable 78% on Rotten Tomatoes currently so I’m still excited to check this out soon. - The Choice – Boy and girl fall for each other. Tragedy ensues (I’m sure).
Directed by Ross Katz (Adult Beginners)
Starring Benjamin Walker, Teresa Palmer, Alexandra Daddario, Maggie Grace
So she’s totally going on life support and he has to decide if she’s going to stay on the plug right? I’m so tempted to just go read the wiki plot of this. Nicholas Sparks joints of late always have crazy plots. Okay I am doing this… Alright, I can say no more lest spoil it for you Sparks fanboys, but this one is sadly not full of ridiculous plot points unless the wiki is lacking the finer details. Guess I will just have to wait to see if FilmDrunk puts outs one of my favorite features on it – Plot Recreated With Reviews.
- Regression – An investigation into a rape case points to a greater menace at play.
Directed by Alejandro Amenábar (The Sea Inside, The Others)
Starring Ethan Hawke, David Thewlis, Emma Watson
This is the kind of trailer that I stopped after 1 minute because I was into it and just don’t want to see too much. First, it has Ethan Hawke so I’m almost already on board with it anyway. Then it has an investigation and evil things afoot and I’m intrigued. I don’t want all the details though! It’s unfortunately sitting at 5% on Rotten Tomatoes but I still would watch on a sleepy Saturday afternoon, even if it’s just to gauge if it’s actually that bad.
