Get Hard (2015) Directed by Etan Cohen. Starring: Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart, Alison Brie. IMDB says: “When millionaire James King is nailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis to prep him to go behind bars.”
Get Hard stars Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart as a successful business man (Ferrell as James King) who is indicted for tax evasion and a car washing business owner (Hart as Darnell Lewis) who helps him train for his prison sentence. Darnell has never actually been to prison, but agrees to help King for enough money to make a down payment on a house. The film also stars Craig T. Nelson as King’s boss and father-in-law and Alison Brie as King’s gold digging wife.
Ferrell and Hart work really well together comedically. They are both individually funny and are able to keep up with each other so neither is outshined. Watching scenes with just the two of them on screen is the best part of the movie and what ultimately makes it worth the watch.
The story of the film is really just there for them to hang the premise on. Everything that happens is to set up jokes. The writers did a good job of fitting in as many as they could and utilizing the topic fully. The movie never really feels stale, and there are a few scenes spliced in for mild shock value, so the film should have no problem keeping your attention. Some people may think some parts go a bit far, but nothing is worse than I’ve seen in other movies.
Get Hard is really a comedy for fans of Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. If you are a fan of either of these comedians and their stand up or previous films, you will most likely enjoy Get Hard. It may not be as stand-out as some other things these actors have done, but it is fun watching them mix their styles.
