12.12.14.2 Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Exodus: Gods and Kings – What can I complain about this movie that hasn’t been said already? The casting is a joke. These biblical epics are already tired. There’s no way this is going to land as well as everyone involved assumed. Back when this was announced and I heard people were excited I did not understand why. It always just seemed like a bad idea. Seeing the trailer and hearing very poor early reviews only confirmed my suspicions.
  • Top Five – This looks pretty funny and after reading Chris Rock’s fantastic Vulture interview, I think it’s going to be smart too. He’s such a talented comedian and this looks like a great starring vehicle for him. He just had to make it himself apparently, considering the other movies he’s done recently. This might be an entertaining choice considering how wide releases have slowed since Mockingjay came out.

  • Inherent Vice – What a great cast, trailer, poster, etc. PTA’s latest just looks like a damn good time. I’ve heard it’s zany and the source material was pretty wild, and it’s just got me more excited to check this out. I’m somewhat surprised it hasn’t really factored into the awards discussion at all, but that doesn’t give me reservations. It just sucks that it’s getting a pretty slow roll out and won’t be out most places for another month, but it seems like one to check out as soon as it’s available by you.
Playing in select theaters – wide release on January 9th.
