Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 – I feel like if you’re going to split this novel into two movies, couldn’t you at least come up with two titles instead of this part 1/part 2 bull shit? Mockingjay and… Mockingjay Rises? I don’t know, I’m not getting paid for this but someone is. I got a chance to see this already, so I can say that I guess this really does earn the title of being a Part 1. It’s certainly a set up movie for the final Hunger Games sequel. However, this isn’t a terrible thing. It’s actually kind of nice to see this world and story expanded on, even if it’s not the most eventful movie. I’ll have a full review up tomorrow, but this is a good movie definitely worth watching if you’re a fan of the series.
- V/H/S: Viral – I really enjoyed the first V/H/S/ and mostly enjoyed the sequel. Overall, I thought the second downgraded a bit and it seems like the trend follows with this third edition. The thing about anthologies is you never have to sit too long with any one story. Chances are if you don’t love the ghost story involving eye ball cameras, there’s always a biker turning into a zombie in the woods using a go pro to draw you back in. Because of that I will definitely check this out and at least see if there are a couple of good shorts mixed in the bunch.
Now on VOD and see where it’s playing in select theaters here. - A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night – This Iranian film is described as a vampire Western so you sort of know off the bat that it’s going to be different. The film looks very stylish, filmed in gorgeous black and white with an offbeat vibe. I immediately got a Tarantino vibe off this (probably specifically because of the music in the trailer). Then I saw the shirt director Ana Lily Amirpour (this is her first feature film, by the way) is wearing on her IMDb page and it all made sense. I’m very much looking forward to checking out this intriguing film.
