Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Horrible Bosses 2 – Nick wrote a pretty positive review for this. It seems if you liked Horrible Bosses, you’ll probably like this one too. To be honest, when I heard there was going to be a sequel I found it highly unnecessary, but I’m still willing to give this a shot because I haven’t seen a comedy in theaters for awhile now. It kind of seems like a great way to let off steam after listening to your conservative family members talk politics through your holiday dinner though.
- Penguins of Madagascar – If you have to take your damn kid or nephew/niece or cousin to the movie this is what you’ll be seeing. Have fun! The Madagascar movies seem fun enough though. They just lack the sort of importance that Pixar movies have that makes them seem more proper for adults to love. Anyway, that’s all I have to say about that.
- The Imitation Game (opens Friday) – Oscar alert – we have another biopic in theaters, and this one is also about a genius and stars British people. Unlike The Theory of Everything, this one is not mostly focused on said genius’s personal life. This film focuses on the work Alan Turing did to solve the Enigma code during WWII is balanced out with the personal side with his hidden homosexuality. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Turing with Kiera Knightley playing a colleague. It looks like an interesting story and a good movie, but it just feels so Oscar-y. That is holding me back just little bit, but I still plan to see this.
Playing in select theaters. - The Babadook (opens Friday) – This has been the horror movie receiving the highest level of praise that I’ve heard about this year. Obviously I’m really freaking excited to see this. It has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is almost unheard of for a horror movie. It’s about a widow raising her son when an evil presence enters their lives. I watched the first minute of the trailer and the dread was palpable. Didn’t go farther than that to avoid seeing too much. I am really hoping to find this to be just as great as everyone else.
