9.18.1  Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • This Is Where I Leave You – These large ensemble family dramas usually feel too run of the mill. I still haven’t seen August: Osage County. Maybe because I knew a movie just like it would be out a year later. This one centers around the death of the family patriarch which brings his (mildly) dysfunctional family together. I must say though, despite how cliché and un-catchy as the trailer is, I still can’t help but want to check it out because I really like the cast. These films always seem to know they have you hooked when they round together 8-10 familiar faces. Let’s just say my expectations won’t be too high when I finally do check this one out.
  • A Walk Among The Tombstones – While it’s easy to lump this in as Liam Neeson continuing his ride on the Taken train, this seems to be something a bit different. Will’s review will be up tomorrow but apparently this is a more character driven story. In fact, if you’re expecting another Taken-esque action movie you might end up slightly disappointed. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the watch. Maybe not a must see in theaters, but I could see it as a perfect at home watch when you’re in the mood to watch a man deal with his demons while solving a mystery.
  • The Maze Runner – This latest young adult dystopian adaptation is based on The Maze Runner. The story follows a group of boys stuck inside a maze with no memory of why they are there or who they are. They must figure out how to escape and what’s waiting for them if they succeed. I read this book after hearing a lot of good things and though it was just okay. Nothing nearly as exciting or addictive as The Hunger Games, but also decent enough that I’m now on the third book in the trilogy. After reading the book I watched the trailer without much excitement going in but immediately thought this looked like a well done adaptation. It looks better than I imagined it in my head. Lindsay’s review for this will be up tomorrow, but I’ll say her response hasn’t diminished my hope that this will be a good one.

  • Tusk – Kevin Smith is back at it with this super weird looking horror movie. The story it’s based on is completely ridiculous – a man put a wanted ad out to offer lodging to anyone willing to dress as a walrus. Smith’s twist on this goofy ad is to make Michael Parks kidnap Justin Long during an interview gone wrong so that he can transform him into a walrus creature. Very Human Centipede-y it seems. The mix of horror and comedy feels a little unsettling, but I’m hoping for great results. If not great, at least fun and super creepy.Playing in select theaters and expanding .
