Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Godzilla – The first real summer blockbuster is hitting theaters tomorrow (or tonight if we’re being honest). It was one of those movies that looked awesome from the trailer and immediately reigned in expectations. There’s always those movies every year that you think will be standout and then just end up as okay. Now that the reviews are coming in and they’re looking great (including a very positive one that FTS will be posting tomorrow), I’m letting myself get excited.
- Million Dollar Arm – As much as I adore Jon Hamm (who doesn’t?) and want Lake Bell to be a bigger thing, I can’t see myself watching this movie. Hamm plays a sports agent who discovers some cricket players in Mumbai and represent them in hopes of signing them in MLB. As this is produced by Disney and looks like your standard heart warming tale, I expect something quite vanilla and family friendly. Not exactly what I’m looking for in a film, but pleasant enough I suppose.
- God’s Pocket (available May 14) – While not Philip Seymour Hoffman’s last role we’ll see in a film, this seems like a must watch simply for the fact this it is one of the last. He plays a man trying to figure out how his son was killed in one of those cliche blue collar towns that have a rough, seedy underbelly. It seems to not be all that great of a film which is disappointing, and I couldn’t help but want to go check out last year’s Out of the Furnace which looked better than this.

It follows some high school aged characters as they navigate adolescence so if it manages to capture that well it could be pretty good. I think I like Emma Roberts, especially after her funny performance on last season of American Horror Story and she’s been getting some good buzz for this role. Overall, just seems like it’s worth the watch at some point. Let’s see what Gia Coppola can do.
