As a beer lover, I often find myself selecting out a brew to fit my mood. And as a movie lover, most of the time the two go hand in hand. So I decided to share some pairings of film and beer that I think go great together. Take a look at my pick of the month and hopefully you will enjoy it.
Sly Fox is a brewery with two locations in Pennsylvania that was founded in 1995 and has been growing rapidly over the past few years. They offer many styles of beer at their taprooms and some of them are distributed in cans around the Mid-Atlantic region. Most of their beers are German-style, but they have a wider variety of stores available as well. Their Helles Golden Lager is a smooth, malty beer that hits the spot when you drink one, but would be well suited for a night of drinking.
Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox is a stop motion film adapted from Roald Dahl’s children’s book of the same name. Mr. Fox is voiced by George Clooney and his wife’s by Meryl Streep. Other characters are voiced by long running Anderson collaborators Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, and Owen Wilson. The movie follows Fox as he and his friends break into farms of varying danger to steal the food inside to feed their families.
Sly Fox brewery makes beers with fine ingredients and Mr. Fox is a sly fox who steals fine ingredients from unsavory farmers. The malt is in the forefront of the flavor of Helles lager and that flavor almost always makes me think of the land it was grown on. The beer clocks in at 4.9% ABV, but has a lot to offer in terms of flavor. Similarly, Fantastic Mr. Fox seems like a standard children’s film, but is in fact filled with nuance and clever direction that gets better the more you watch it.
