Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Battle of the Year – What in the freaking shit is this mess? The fact that this stars Chris Brown as a guy named Rooster is enough for me to write this off. And I really don’t need any more generic dancing movies ever. Even if America’s Best Dance Crew was kind of a cool show, I really don’t need a movie about a b-boy dance crew. Also, what are you doing with your career Josh Peck? Your progression of Ice Age to Red Dawn to this is not impressing me and I know you’re better than that.
- Prisoners – Quickly after seeing the trailer for this film, it jumped to one my most anticipated movies for the fall season. The cast is great—Hugh Jackman looking intense, Paul Dano doing his best creep, and Jake Gyllenhaal sporting that hair cut. There’s also Melissa Leo, Viola Davis, and Maria Bello who aren’t as prominent in the trailer but I’m sure will be great in the film. I’m intrigued by the premise and hope it delivers on the twisty thriller it appears to be.
- Thanks For Sharing – Geez, I can’t tell if it’s a case of bad trailer making but this movie looks incredibly corny. It also might be that Josh Gad is in it. I feel like the Mark Ruffalo and Gwyneth Paltrow storyline of trying to make a relationship work with a sex addict could be interesting, but this trailer is making it seem like a weird rom com. Then you have freaking Pink…I mean Alecia Moore… as one of your main cast and I just can’t find much enthusiasm towards it.
See if this is playing in theaters near you here - Enough Said – This looks like a perfectly fine little romantic comedy. It seems to hit a similar target as It’s Complicated which I actually really enjoyed. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is perfect (you should be watching VEEP) and reviews say James Gandolfini gives a warm performance, one that is probably going to make me tear up given the circumstances. Even if I don’t get to theaters for this one, I will definitely see it at home.
See if this is playing in theaters near you here - A Single Shot – I would watch Sam Rockwell in anything, so this looks great to me. It seems to revisit a similar back woods town to the Ozarks seen in Winter’s Bone, and has Rockwell as a man who keeps the money he finds on a woman he accidentally kills while hunting. Of course, the people who the money belongs to want that shit back, and are going to use whatever means necessary to get it. Hopefully this thriller is a good time, because I plan to see it at some point.
