Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones: Beautiful Creatures
Trying desperately to fill the space left by the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, studios are gobbling up the movie rights to popular book series left and right. The next on the list is The Mortal Instruments series with 6 books that will somehow turn into 25 movies. The basic premise is that half-angels are running around New York City killing demons. Instead of watching City of Bones, catch Beautiful Creatures at home instead. Both feature pretty teenagers working out their sexual tensions while being caught in the fight between good and evil, but Beautiful Creatures offers a great back-story and solid acting.
Instead of The World’s End, watch :Attack The Block
I have to be honest *looks over left shoulder, then right* I don’t understand the collective boner that people have for the ‘Blood and Ice Cream’ trilogy. I don’t hate the movies by any means, I found both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz to be pretty funny, but the way people go on and on about them I just don’t get it. Well if you’re like me (you’re in a vast minority) and not in a rush to catch The World’s End, stay home and pop in Attack the Block – a charming British indie sci-fi comedy. Aliens just so happen to invade an apartment high rise in London and its up to some young tenants to defend their home.
The Great Gatsby
I love Baz Lurhman and his visuals; I’ve said once before that if I were a director my work would look like his. So I was over the moon when I heard he was doing Gatsby, I thought that Lurhman’s sense of style would lend itself to the opulence of the 1920’s setting. Nick and Jess had some differing opinions in their review, but this is definitely a movie I’ll be picking up on Tuesday.
Dredd (2012)
Dredd is a movie that always escapes me. I remember seeing a trailer for it and thinking, “I want to see that when it comes out.” Never did. I remember when it came out on DVD, every time I had a few extra bucks for a frivolous purchase the store never had Dredd in stock. Well now it’s instant watch on Netflix waiting for me (and you) to watch it.
Dredd Netflix Synopsis: In the future, catastrophic wars have transformed Earth into a barren wasteland with the remaining population crowded into megacities, where all-powerful cops — including the ultraviolent Judge Dredd — are on the hunt for drug-dealing terrorists.
