news

I don’t think anyone was hoping to hear this news, but there is currently a prequel project in the works for horror masterpiece The Shining. I highly doubt it will come close to the original but if it follows the history of the Overlook Hotel, there will at least be plenty of material to run with. [Glen Mazzara To Write ‘Shining’ Prequel Called ‘The Overlook Hotel’]

Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is currently putting together a nice little cast for his upcoming film Beware the Night which is apparently going to be a paranormal cop genre mashup. [Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez, Olivia Munn Join ‘Sinister’ Director’s ‘Beware the Night’]

So… Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead film (the recent one) and Sam Raimi’s new sequel are currently in development but it seems both directors have distant plans to someday merge the two story lines. [Bruce Campbell and ‘Evil Dead’ Director Fede Alvarez Would Love to Merge Original and Remake Storylines]

trailers

YOU’RE NEXT

Director: Adam Wingard / Stars: Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, and AJ Bowen

I can see why this has been receiving a lot of buzz. The trailer is well executed and premise is scary. Home invasion horror seems to be making a comeback since Strangers (a movie I really liked) came out back in 2008. I have no complaints with any of the acting either, making this one an new frightfest I will be anticipating.

THE HAPPY HOUSE

Director:D.W. Young / Stars: Khan Baykal, Aya Cash, and Marceline Hugot

I’m sorry but this looks borderline awful. Setting aside the amateur performances and low budget aesthetic, the trailer for this is tonally confused. I understand that it is trying to emphasize the campier elements of the movie but I don’t even think this comes close to feeling like a horror film.

THE CONJURING

Director: James Wan / Stars: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, and Ron Livingston

Well I’m, digging the talent involved with this. Both Vera and Wilson are strong leads and James Wan is permanently okay in my book because of Insidious. I wasn’t particularly creeped out by the trailer but did enjoy the story. As long as Wan can keep it out of cliche territory, we should be in for a treat.

THE PURGE

Director: James DeMonaco / Stars: Lena Headey, Ethan Hawke, and Tony Oller

I like this. Again, seems to be feeding off Strangers but that’s okay for me. I like Hawke a lot and it’s nice to see Heady doing work (she was fun in Dredd.) Hopefully this flick will be able to keep the tension (and plausibility) up enough for it’s entire run time.

CARRIE

Director: Kimberly Peirce / Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer

Well, I guess I don’t need to see the Carrie remake now, I just watched it. I mean shit, I know most people know the story but what is the point of this film existing? It looks shot for shot and I don’t think Chloë is anything like Sissy Spacek so why not update the film? This is feeling like a pass.
