Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of 21 and Over: Superbad
21 and Over is the story of some young people and the crazy adventures surrounding one of their 21st birthdays. In a lot of ways it sounds like a cross between Superbad and The Hangover so my recommendation is to see Superbad, if you haven’t already. This film focuses on a slightly younger set of young people and the hijinks that occur as they attempt to have some fun. It’s a fun film and a very enjoyable watch.
Instead of Jack and the Giant Slayer: John Carter
Jack and the Giant Slayer sounds a lot like John Carter to me. A boy finds a way to be magically transported to another time/place and then is forced into fighting to save himself and others. Both films feature impressive visuals and decent acting. If you’re in the mood for an epic adventure film, check out John Carter.
Instead of The Last Exorcism Part II: The Last Exorcism
The Last Exorcism was a moderately popular horror film presented in a found-footage style. The sequel is still a horror film but they have abandoned the found-footage style. The sequel follows one of the original cast members and shows her life after the exorcism. If you haven’t seen the first one, It’s a good watch especially if you enjoy horror/exorcism films.
Instead of The Phantom: Crimson Tide
The Phantom is a submarine film, so is Crimson Tide. Crimson Tide is a really well made film featuring solid acting from Denzel and Hackman and a compelling storyline. Both of the films feature a crucial moment where the weight of the world lies on one man’s shoulders. Check out the soundtrack for Crimson Tide as well, composer Hans Zimmer did some great work on it.
Wreck-it Ralph (2012)
Wreck it Ralph is one of the best animated films of the year and is a sheer delight for children of all ages. If you haven’t seen it yet and especially if you have children, this is one you’ll want to pick up on release day. The humor should keep you entertained while the children are dazzled by the fantastic animations and well-presented plot.
Meeting Evil (2012)
This is a good, yet unconventional, film about a man who proves no good dead goes unpunished. John is swept into a world of lunacy and violence that the police believe he is the source of. This is a story of mental illness, kindness, violence, and love.
Meeting Evil Netflix Synopsis: When a stranger comes to his door seeking help, John’s generous nature leads him to become entangled in the man’s lunatic spree of violence. By the end of the day, John must decide what acts he’s willing to commit to protect his family.
What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
