Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of Chasing Mavericks: The Karate Kid
Chasing Mavericks stars Gerald Butler as he reluctantly teaches a kid how to surf so he can ride a dangerous wave. Its the kind of movie where they both learn a lot about themselves along the way. Instead of watching Chasing Mavericks, you could watch the Karate Kid and see Pat “Mr. Miyagi” Morita teach Ralph Macchio how to fight. The Karate Kid has a similar message, with the added benefit of being a great 80’s movie.
Instead of Cloud Atlas: The Fountain
Cloud Atlas is the story of numerous characters in multiple settings and how all of those stories intertwine and react. The story of Cloud Atlas seems very thick and this makes it seem very similar to The Fountain. The Fountain is about a couple whose love story is spread over multiple stories and unfolds in a enigmatic way. If you can’t make out to the theater to see Cloud Atlas, The Fountain should give you a similarly weird feeling while viewing it.
Instead of Fun Size: Superbad
Fun Size follows some young actresses as they try to reach a party to meet up with their crushes in this Nickelodeon produced movie. Instead, you could just watch Michael Cera and Jonah Hill do the same thing but with alcohol involved. Superbad is definitely not as kid friendly as Fun Size, but it’ll be a lot more fun for a more mature audience.
Instead of Silent Hill: Revelation: Pan’s Labyrinth
Silent Hill: Revelation is based off the Silent Hill video game franchise. The protagonist of the game always finds themselves in the town of Silent Hill. The games are filled with weird happenings and strange creatures. Similarly, Pan’s Labyrinth is a strange place filled with amazing creatures. The movie was promoted almost solely off its magical tone and interesting character design. In addition, Pan’s Labyrinth has a story that most people would find more engrossing than Silent Hill. So, if you can’t make it to that movie, Pan’s Labyrinth should make for a better substitute.
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
Safety Not Guaranteed stars Aubrey Plaza, Jeff Garlin, Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Jake Johnson. Aubrey Plaza plays a woman who as recently graduated from college, but has to move back in with her father, played by Jeff Garlin. She interns at a magazine where she and a coworker investigate an intriguing wanted ad to accompany someone on a trip back in time. The movie was well reviewed as a smart and heart warming indie comedy.
Louie (2010-2011)
Comedian Louie CK recently announced that he will be taking a long hiatus from his brilliant sitcom Louie now that the third season has ended. If you haven’t seen the show, now is a perfect time to catch up on the previous seasons.
Louie Netflix Synopsis: Written and directed by comic Louis C.K. — who plays a fictionalized version of himself — this FX series eschews sitcom structure for a loose format that lets single dad Louie be his irascible self — through vignettes, club performances and more.
What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
