Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit a home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.

Instead of Act of Valor: The Hurt Locker
While Act of Valor used real Navy Seals as performers, the film was criticized for its poor acting. The Hurt Locker on the other hand was praised for not only it’s performances but realistic portrayal of war as well. If you haven’t yet, take a look at this film, which also happens to be 2009’s Best Picture Winner. The Hurt Locker is available for purchase here.

Instead of Gone: Kiss The Girls

The latest dumb role Amanda Seyfriend has managed her way into is former kidnapping victim Jill in the new film Gone. From the trailer and reviews alike, the movie seems to be a C grade, by the books thriller. If you’re anything like me, you might enjoy something with a bit more edge. While Kiss The Girls (90’s thriller starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd) is nothing more than a popcorn flick, there is certainly a sense of perversion and mystery wrapped around it’s plot. The story peruses a serial killer named “Casanova” as he collects and kills talented, beautiful women. Kiss The Girls is currently available for streaming on Amazon Instant Video.

Instead of Wanderlust: Role Models

I assume this is the obvious choice for this list, but just in case you’re not acquainted yet with David Wain’s other directorial efforts, Role Models is a great place to start. Starring Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott, Role Models follows two inept dudes as they involuntarily take part in a mentoring program. The film is hysterical and full of non stop laughs. If you’re not into it, I think it’s safe to say you can stay away from Wanderlust as well. Role Models is currently available for streaming on Amazon Instant Video.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

The week I recommend taking a look at one of 2011’s most overlooked and underrated film. MMMM is a haunting drama/thriller/mystery about a young women struggling to cope with reality after recently fleeing a cult. With solid performances all around, it is truly newcomer Elizabeth Olsen that does a tremendous job here in her role. First time director Sean Durkin (who also wrote the script) also knocks it out of the park with some daring and assured work behind the lens. Pick up the film here.

I Love You Phillip Morris

Not many people have heard of I Love you Phillip Morris. Bad marketing may be to blame for the lack of viewership, but now that it’s on Watch it Now, you shouldn’t miss it. The film stars Jim Carey as a flamboyant gay con man that falls in love with another man in prison named Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor.) While Carey is occasionally a little over the top, the film is never without it’s charms and genuinely hilarious moments.

I Love You Phillip Morris Netflix Synopsis: When upstanding Texas cop Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) realizes he’s gay, he changes his entire life and pulls a series of bold con jobs that lands him in jail — where he meets his one true love, cellmate Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). When Morris is transferred to another prison, lovesick Russell mounts a series of jailbreaks just to be with his beloved soul mate. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa direct this comedy based on a true story.

What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
