Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of A Haunted House: Scary Movie 2
These are essentially the same films. Scary Movie the Wayans brothers as frightened house guests in a supposedly haunted house. The newest addition to the horror parody genre, A Haunted House, takes aim at the new obsession over found footage films like Paranormal Activity. Scary Movie 2 is based more around the classic horror films like The Exorcist and Poltergesit. If you are into the campy horror parody genre and haven’t seen this film, you’re missing out.
Instead of Zero Dark Thirty: Act of Valor
I had generally positive things to say about this film when I saw it in theaters and then generally negative things to say after I bought it on DVD. If you’re interested in a film that takes a realistic approach to modern military tactics, look no further. Save yourself the ticket money for Zero Dark Thirty and take a look at Act of Valor on instant watch. The film casts actual marines and tries to give an accurate portrayal of the things they face. Also of note is the way this film is shot, it’s made to look sort of like a video game. This is definitely worth the watch if you haven’t seen it.
Instead of Gangster Squad: The Untouchables
This film focuses on an elite group of police officers charged with the unenviable duty of tracking down Al Capone and the illegal distributors of alcohol during prohibition. The film is set up similarly to Gangster Squad albeit a different time of American History. The film prominently features Sean Connery and Kevin Costner in very fitting roles. Also, look for Robert DeNiro playing the part of Al Capone.
Taken 2 (2011)
This film was a huge box office success and a great film despite failing to live up to the fame of the first film. I reviewed this film when it came out and gave it relatively high marks but I understood the reason why some may be disappointed. The simple fact is, you’ll probably enjoy this movie, probably more so if you’ve never seen the first one. The action sequences are good, the dialogue is good, and the plot works but for whatever reason it just doesn’t have the same magic that the original Taken did. You should definitely give this one a chance and see how you think it compares, maybe even drop us a line and tell us about it.
Battleground (2012)
This film is a fun watch! Made and released in Canada, this film shows us the after-effects of a bank robbery. Six thugs wind up hiding out in a forest when their vehicle goes missing. Trying to make their way out of the wilderness, they encounter a Canadian Rambo who is on a mission to kill anyone who enters his area of the forest. His tactical training and experience make him a worthy adversary for even the most hardened street criminal.
Battleground Netflix Synopsis: After a violent bank robbery goes wrong, six testosterone-fueled criminals face someone far worse than themselves: The Hunter, a grizzled Vietnam Vet who hasn’t let go of the war, engages the equally disturbed criminals in a battle for survival.
What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
