I am a huge horror fan. I love gore and guts and cuts. But there are always a few things I see in movies that consistently make my skin crawl. This effect different for everyone: Jason hates anything to do with eyeball torture, Rob hates excessive amounts of blood, and Jess hates watching Malcolm McDowell run around playing Emperor. For me, there are the 6 Things That Make Me Cringe in Movies:
6. When Someone Is Cut, Beat, Scratched While Naked
As seen in: I Spit On Your Grave, tons of other films
It would suck so bad to be on the run from a killer, naked. I suppose this is more fact than opinion but I just feel like it would be much more painful to face the elements with no clothes. I hate when a character is running around naked or only wearing underwear and they are tripping and falling. I feel so bad and I just want to run into the movie and throw them some comfy sweats!
5.Teeth Pulling/Crushing
As seen in: The Dentist, Marathon Man, American History X
First off, no one really likes going to the dentist or dealing with tooth pain. So I think everyone can relate to how AWFUL it would feel to get your tooth ripped out or fucked with. UGH, scary gross. I have a toothache now.
4. Fingernails Getting Ripped Off
As seen in: Stir of Echoes, Syriana, Lots of movies where character is dragged off
UGGHH so painful! For some reason I think I am more scared of the idea of having a nail ripped off than it actually happening. I suppose it would hurt pretty bad but it’s not like I’m exactly familiar with the pain. For some reason those images just stick in your mind as being a shock of pure horror.
3. Achilles Heel Slice
As seen in: Pet Cemetery, Hostel, Urban Legends
“The Achilles tendon (or occasionally Achilles’ tendon ), also known as the calcaneal tendon or the tendo calcaneus , is a tendon of the posterior leg. It serves to attach the plantaris, gastrocnemius (calf) and soleus muscles to the calcaneus (heel) bone.” –wikipedia
Another really vulnerable part on your body, a cut Achilles heel is said to be one of the most painful experiences one could ever imagine. As I understand it, once the tendon is cut, it snaps and rolls back under your skin. I seriously just got the shivers thinking about that. Sooooo gnarly.
2. Rape
As seen in: The Hills Have Eyes, Irreversible, Last House On The Left
This entry should probably number one on my list. The only reason it isn’t is because my number one I seriously can never stomach to even look at for some reason. Not to say that some rape is ‘watchable’ but sometimes in a movie it will be used to setup the story and I can allow myself to take in whats happening. Regardless of that fact, I think that rape of any kind is the single most disgusting act one human can impose on another. The films I mentioned above have some very hard to witness scenes.
1. Self Mutilation (most often cutting)
As seen in: Thriteen, The Virgin Suicides, Rules of Attraction
I absolutely, positively hate watching anything where someone cuts themselves or hurts themselves. Cringe-inducing. Most of the time I can’t watch it. 98% of the time it is a peeking through fingers situation for me.
Now tell us what makes you cringe while enjoying this photo of puppies:
