October is my favorite time of year mainly because Halloween is my favorite Holiday. Each year my big dilemma stems from figuring out which movie to imitate in the form of a Halloween costume. So I thought it might be fun to highlight some of the best costumes worn by movie characters. Take a look at the list below.
1. Josie Geller as Rosalind – Never Been Kissed
While Never Been Kissed is not exactly a film I necessarily like, It does feature a whole slew of costumes, and one in particular stands out. The film’s heroine Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore), is a journalist that enrolls back in high school to research a story. The problem of course is that Josie was a nerd back in high school and finds it challenging to fit in. She starts slowly falling for the school’s English teacher Sam (Michael Vartan) and they share a bond over classic literature. Josie’s costume is Rosalind from Shakespeare’s As You Like It which fits the character quite well, and is visually impressive.
2. Donnie as Skeleton – Donnie Darko
It’s pretty hard to consolidate all of the themes sifting through the cult hit Donnie Darko. And the film’s title character of the same name is there to deal with all of it. Time travel, alternate universes, and paranoid schizophrenia – Donnie handles it all. That’s why his basic black skeleton suit, accessorized with grey cotton hoody is such a perfect fit. The costume is memorable because it’s bizzare Donnie decided to wear any costume at all in the film. It’s like the complex character thought ‘Well it is a Halloween party,” reached into his dresser drawer, and there it was.
3. Molly as an Angel – Idle Hands
Jessica Alba plays the always important ‘hot chick’ in the silly horror comedy Idle Hands. In the film, the sexy Alba attends the schools Halloween dance as an angel. This costume makes the list because the character Molly was for a lot of salivating viewers – their first introduction the Jessica Alba. Seeing her body in that much too sweet costume certainly sticks out.
4. Laurie as Little Red Riding Hood – Trick ‘r Treat
I’m still not sure that Trick ‘r Treat has found the widespread audience it deserves. It’s funny, gory, and scary. It’s like the awesome atmospheric horror comic brought to life on screen. In one of the movie’s segments ‘Surprise Party,’ Anna Paquin plays Laurie, a virgin out on Halloween with her more experienced friends. The costume choice of Little Red Riding Hood is integral to the segments story line, and it’s something I wouldn’t want to spoil for those who have yet to see the movie. If you’ve seen the film, you get it, otherwise go check it out now!
5. E.T. as a ghost – E.T.
6. Caddy as the Ex-Wife – Mean Girls
In Mean Girls, main character Cady (Lindsay Lohan) explains “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” Well Cady didn’t get that memo. While the rest of the girls are dressed up as slutty versions of animals or something, she went all out scary. Her self described “Ex-Wife” costume is pretty funny and makes for some great parts in the movie.
7. The cast as Harry Potter characters – Yes Man
Yes Men stars Jim Carey as an overly negative guy named Carl that decides to try a radical new way of life by saying “Yes” to literally everything. So that means RSVPing to every off-the-wall costume party his off-the-wall-ier boss Norman (Rhys Darby) decides to throw. The best includes a Harry Potter shin-dig where some delightful costumes are on display.
