Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- The Age of Adaline – A woman gets into a car accident that turns her immortal. She goes on to live without attachments or real happiness for the next few decades before being recognized.
Directed by Lee Toland Krieger (Celeste and Jesse Forever, The Vicious Kind)
Starring Blake Lively, Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford, Ellen Burstyn, Kathy Baker, Amanda Crew
I’m not the biggest fan of our Babe of the Week Blake Lively, mostly stemming from my Gossip Girl fan days. She was always so bland compared to Leighton Meester who killed it as the sassy, bitchy Blair Waldorf. I didn’t understand why Lively’s career has taken off more than Meester’s (although I guess in fairness it’s not like she’s has a ton of success either). I do see why she was considered for this part though, because she looks perfect through all the different decades. She’s got a very timeless look to her. Besides the dumb looking set up for her immortality, I think it could be an interesting premise. It’s just nothing that I would ever feel the need to see in theaters. - Little Boy – A young boy realizes he has some sort of telekinesis and after his beloved father is drafted during World War II, he is determined to use those powers to bring him home.
Directed by Alejandro Monteverde (Bella)
Starring Jakob Salvati, Emily Watson, Michael Rapaport, Kevin James
What is happening? I don’t even understand what this movie is. It’s some bizarre children’s dramedy about being sad that your parent is at war, I think. But if this damn kid ends WWII via magic I will freak out. Is that what happens? Someone go and see this and then let me know.
- Adult Beginners – Rich guy loses everything and moves into his sister’s place, finally grows up.
Written & directed by Ross Katz (directorial debut!)
Starring Nick Kroll, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Joel McHale
This reminded me so much of Mark Duplass’s show Togetherness, of which I liked the two episodes that I watched but there really wasn’t much there to warrant keeping up when I still haven’t seen so many other shows. Family member forced to move back in is a very common trope, and this doesn’t have anything extra to draw me in. I love Rose Byrne but I don’t know how much that could outweigh my dislike for Nick Kroll. I don’t know if it’s the 5 stupid minutes of Kroll Show that I watched (even though it has Chelsea Peretti so I feel like I should like it) or that I imagine in real life he’s exactly like The Douche. I’d just rather not watch a movie starring him.
