In June I got to see some great movies. This Is The End was probably my favorite movie I’ve seen this year, and certainly the funniest, Much Ado About Nothing was pretty great, World War Z was surprisingly well done, and I had a ton of fun watching the popcorn flick White House Down. Also, there was The Purge, which was …fine. Let’s see what July has to offer.
JULY 3
- Despicable Me 2 – I can’t really give too much of an opinion on this one since I never saw the first but I’ve heard from a lot of people that they found it pretty delightful.
- Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain – I probably wouldn’t ever see something like this in theaters, but Kevin Hart usually cracks me up in whatever he pops up in. He’s got those great crazy eyes. By the way, does anyone watch his mockumentary show Real Husbands of Hollywood? It sounds funny but haven’t caught it yet.
- The Lone Ranger – There seems to be little excitement for this one. I can’t seem to muster much interest myself. I guess we’ll find out if Armie Hammer can carry a movie. Overall, a very boring Fourth of July weekend. Are people afraid Despicable Me 2 is going to dominate?
- The Way, Way Back (limited) – If this is playing by you, definitely seek it out. I saw this over a month ago at this time so I feel like it should have come out by now, but I’m looking forward to seeing it again. It’s pretty great, and if you’re a Sam Rockwell fan you are in for a treat. Also, bonus treat, you can watch Steve Carrell be a huge dick from the very first line of the film.
JULY 12- Grown Ups 2 – Goddammit people, what are you doing? Please do not go see these lest we have to deal as a world with Grown Ups 3.
- Pacific Rim – On the other hand, I can totally get behind this. I can’t wait to see what this crazy sci-fi film Guillermo del Toro has cooked up is all about. It looks crazy and interesting and big and loud. I’m happy to see something this huge based on an original property and I feel like I should probably see anything that stars both Idris Elba and Charlie Day.
- Fruitvale Station (limited) – After all the buzz from Sundance about this film I really can’t wait to see it, despite knowing I’m probably going to be shedding a lot of tears. I feel like it’s going to be so hard watching the events of this film play out when you already know its tragic ending but I think it’s going to be fantastic
- Crystal Fairy (limited) – This trailer looks so damn weird that I can’t help but really want to see this. Michael Cera seems to be picking some interesting roles recently and Gaby Hoffman (who I haven’t seen since she was that little kid from Uncle Buck and Now and Then) looks like such a cuckoo bird. At the very least there should be some intriguing drugs sequences.
JULY 19
- The Conjuring – After Insidious I’m ready for another James Wan creepfest (although it is kind of weird that that sequel is coming out 3 months later). This one is about a real life paranormal investigative husband and wife team that most famously investigated the Amityville house back in the 70’s. This tells the story of another paranormal incident they looked into.
- R.I.P.D – Obviously this looks a lot like Men In Black and it’s annoying to think something is a rip off. I don’t know that this actually looks bad though. I enjoy Ryan Reynolds for the most part, plus it’s got Jeff Bridges and Kevin Bacon. Not necessarily excited for this, or even planning to see it in theaters, but I guess I’m not as aggravated as other people seem to be.
- Red 2 – I still haven’t seen the first, but I can’t say this coming out isn’t pushing me towards catching up. I’ve heard Red was fairly entertaining, but I’m still not particularly worried about it.
- Only God Forgives (limited) – It seems that this one is probably not going to be as revelatory as Drive, but the re-team up of Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling, plus the level of badassery shown in the trailer in the same vein is enough for me to still be excited for this.
JULY 26
- The To-Do List – So I’ve long heard of the movie as the one where Aubrey Plaza plays a recent high school graduate trying to give a blow job before going to college. I was imagining a much more indie feel just because it seemed kind of naughty and it’s Plaza who’s not necessarily a bankable lead at this point. The actual trailer makes it seems slightly more mainstream but it still looks funny. Also the cast includes Bill Hader and Donald Glover and Alia Shawkat and Young Neil and Rachel Bilson, five people I love to see in whatever they’re in.
- The Wolverine – Stop trying to make Wolverine happen! Just let him be. I was really interested when the X-Men Origins film was introduced because I thought they were going to do one neat movie for each of the main X-Men members. Instead it was a crap movie and now they’re doing what essentially feels like a reboot even though it’s supposed to be a sequel to The Last Stand. This is just too much Wolverine for me to handle.
- Blue Jasmine (limited) – I’m willing to watch anything Woody Allen makes, even if his success rate isn’t stellar. When he is on, he’s on. Since this once stars an excellent looking Cate Blanchett (who looks great in the trailer) along with Louis CK, Alec Baldwin, and Peter Sarsgaard it’s already got some promising stuff going for it. I’m hoping this film is one of Allen’s better efforts.
