Here at FTS, we don’t much discuss politics but it seems like guns are a hot topic right now. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, we’re pretty sure you love a bad-ass gun fight. Here are my top 6.
The Untouchables
The staircase scene. Kevin Costner and Andy Garcia are toe-to-toe with Capone’s bad guy buddies. Costner reveals a shotgun from under his coat and one of the goons pulls out a tommy gun. The ensuing shower of lead fills the room. Couple this with a baby rolling down the stairs directly in the middle of the shootout and you have the makings for a seriously dramatic and tension filled scene. The cinematography here is brilliant as well.
Kick-Ass
The final fight scene is a thing of beauty. Chloe Moretz is a tiny purple-haired girl wielding two pistols and facing down a room full of baddies. The choreography here is astounding; she jumps, flips, and does everything short of climbing the walls to get every one of these ne’er-do-wells. The film is awesome in it’s own right but this scene is truly a thing of beauty.
Rambo
The second one. The part where he pulls out the 50cal machine gun. This is just pure bad-assery. The sheer number of rounds that he fires is just absurd, this is probably the goriest scene on this list and also the one with the most deaths. Those bad guys never stood a chance with Rambo firing a truck-mounted machine gun.
The Matrix
I think this may be one of the most iconic shootouts of our generation. The scene where neo is in the lobby and trying to rescue Morpheus. The bullet-time shooting technique was pretty revolutionary when this film came out and the scene is shot just perfectly. Not to mention, Neo has literally dozens of guns at his disposal as he guns down literally everyone in the building. This is an epic scene that was truly amazing when it hit the big screen.
Boondock Saints
The part where they drop from the ceiling. This is just hilarious. The whole movie shows the progression of two good catholic boys to vigilante gunmen hell-bent on taking out the evildoers of the world. This scene was meant to be well-orchestrated but it becomes probably the silliest gunfight in cinematic history when they drop from the ceiling. These guys are pretty serious gunmen but when it comes to planning a multiple homicide, they clearly have some work to do.
Tombstone
This one is my favorite, partly because it’s based on a real event, partly because it’s shot so well and partly because of just how cool it is. The famous showdown at the OK corral depicts Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell facing off with a group of banditos. This, to me, is just such an iconic scene from the days of the old west and surprisingly it’s the only western I felt fit to include on this list. Everything about this scene just screams manliness and pure gunslinging talent.
There were lots of movies I could have included but didn’t like Scarface, shoot-em-up, and any number of westerns and war films. These are the ones I liked best but maybe I missed something, what do you think?
