Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. In this weekly film guide, I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
WIDE RELEASES
Directed by James Bobin(The Muppets, The Muppets Most Wanted)
Starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen
Check out Nick’s review. Long story short, he confirmed my suspicion that this would be bloated and not enjoyable. It looks like a technicolor nightmare. Even some of Alice’s outfits just have like 30 colors incorporated in a garish manner that is very displeasing to the eye. Watching this in 3D seems like it would result in a very big migraine. I never had any desire to watch Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, so I’m not the target here I guess, but there’s way too much other movies out right now to give this one a go.
Directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men: Days of Future Past)
Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac
I thought the last two X-Men movies were a lot of fun, and the first one especially well done. It appears the streak may be trending downward with this one but I still want to see it. I’m not sure if it’s the way too powerful and unbeatable villain or that the story is getting out of hand in general with so many characters. Whatever the case, there’s something that people are not reacting well to so far. What I do like about the trailer is that there seems to be a pretty big focus on kickass female characters. I’m curious about the portrayals of some of our heroes previously seen in the original trilogy. Overall, I am just already in this series 5 movies deep now, so I’m just going to have to keep going no matter if the reviews aren’t as positive.
LIMITED RELEASES
Directed by David Farr (directorial debut!)
Starring Clémence Poésy, David Morrissey, Stephen Campbell Moore
It’s hard to know what the heck is going on in this trailer and that really makes me intrigued. It’s a thriller that seems to have a layered meaning about the fear of becoming a mother/parent that could be quite interesting. Hopefully it doesn’t go quite the route of Inside for the mother’s sake. The trailer is sporting some nice visuals and a dark, tense tone which hopefully falls in line with the actual movie. I believe this one will be available through VOD if you’re looking to watch something at home in the dark this weekend.
- Chevalier– A group of men compete against each other to see who’s the best among them.
Directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg)
Starring Vangelis Mourikis, Nikos Orphanos, Yorgos Pirpassopoulos
This concept is very silly, but this movie looks more like dark, weird comedy. If it’s well directed and acted plus arrives to a point by the end it could be an enjoyable watch just for the randomness of the whole endeavor. Whatever it is (most likely a comedic look at masculinity) it could be interesting and has been well-received so far.
