Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Aloha – A defense contractor travels to Hawaii on assignment, reconnecting with his past love and also sparking a new romance with a young pilot.
Directed & written by Cameron Crowe
Starring Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Danny McBride, John Krasinski, Bill Murray, Alec Baldwin
I really do want Cameron Crowe to deliver another great movie. Say Anything is one of my favorite movies. I love Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous. I saw Elizabethtown at the right age where other’s gripes did not get to me. The cast of Aloha seems like a sure win and the trailer seemed cute enough. The responses so far have been so disheartening though, with many saying it’s a whole lot of empty sap. I’m sure I will still catch it at some point, but the motivation to see it in theaters has decreased. - San Andreas – A man who’s made a career out of piloting a rescue-chopper must save his wife and daughter after a horrific earthquake.
Directed by Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Island)
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Giamatti
I’ll be honest, I saw this trailer right after the earthquakes in Nepal so seeing a disaster like this in a popcorn flick particularly didn’t sit well. Just not great juxtaposition. Besides that though, it really does not look very appealing. I love Dwayne Johnson just as much as your next person with good taste, but this is not the right fit for that lovable fellow. It doesn’t look funny at all. It’s so serious it becomes laughable when that Sia cover starts playing. I want my Dwayne with a whole lot of muscles (given) and that charismatic humor that has made him box office viagra. This melodramatic movie is a total misuse.
- Results – Two personal trainers are thrown into an oddball situation with a new rich client.
Directed & written by Andrew Bujalski (Computer Chess)
Starring Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders, Kevin Corrigan, Giovanni Ribisi, Brooklyn Decker, Anthony Michael Hall
Not exactly the most must-see movie, but I can’t help but be drawn into this weird dynamic between Cobie Smulders, Guy Pearce, and Kevin Corrigan. All their characters are odd birds which should make for an entertaining watch. I love seeing Corrigan pop up in anything, and at least this time he’s playing slightly against type as a wealthy skeez. And hey, Anthony Michael Hall! The combination of attention grabbing trailer and mostly positive reviews makes me want to at least catch this at home at some point. Available through video on demand.
