In an attempt to stick to our movie-related New Years resolutions, Jess and I plan to keep a weekly record of our progress towards our goal. See if we hit our goal this week and what movies we watched. You can also check out our initial resolutions post here.
My big goal this year is to watch three types of movies a week:
- 1 New Movie (anything that has come out in the last 3-4 months)
- 1 Movie From My Netflix Queue (it has to be from the list I cemented in stone at the beginning of 2014 to count)
- 1 Movie I’ve Been Meaning to Rewatch
Lets take a look at what was watched this past week.
New Movies:
- It Follows – I can’t recall the last good horror movie I’ve seen in theaters so this was a very welcome trip to the movies. I loved the throwback feel and it has some really interesting direction that makes me look forward to what director David Robert Mitchell does next. I’m excited this managed to land in the top 5 box office last weekend considering its limited release – definitely check it out if it’s in your area.
Re-watched:
- Heathers – Haven’t seen this since for a long time, and I apparently only really remembered the first half. I love the satire of high school and iconic lines from the movie. Plus I can’t believe Winona Ryder made this and Beetlejuice in the same year! Overall though, still a fun movie but I don’t think I’m quite as in love with it as other people.
Off the Queue:
- Big Bad Wolves – A newer queue pick that I’ve been excited to check out and it did not disappoint. This thriller about an accused child killer who’s kidnapped by one of his victim’s father keeps you on your toes throughout with both its surprises and brutality. It constantly plays with your expectations and sympathies.
New Movies:
- It Follows – It’s nice to see creepy indie horror flicks getting so much love from the critics. This has a distinctly vintage feel to it (very Carpenter) and an original premise that I loved. I’m happy I was able to catch this in theaters and would suggest others do the same.
Re-watched:
- Legally Blonde – By most accounts, this is a pretty silly movie. It has a thin plot that isn’t terribly exciting but LB succeeds because of Reese Witherspoon’s Elle. She is so damn likable that it’s hard to turn away from her. It’s also a fun twist on a Sorority girl – reminding us to never judge a book by its cover.
Off the Queue:
- Life Itself – A very worthwhile doc about film critic Roger Ebert – a truly interesting man with a rich and full life. Also, utterly heartbreaking.
