11.13.2  Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Dumb and Dumber To – Based on French Toastie Nick’s violently negative reaction to this movie, I don’t think I can even try to muster any positivity towards it at this point. When it was first announced there were huge doubts, then I thought, well Anchorman 2 worked out alright. Then the trailer came out and while there was at least one funny gag (that I can’t even recall now), it just felt very… sad. Let’s all just rewatch the original and leave it at that.
  • Beyond the Lights – One wonderful evening, about two months ago, I shared some good conversation over pizza, poutine, and beer with Courtney Small of Cinema Axis. He and his wife had just come out of a TIFF screening of Beyond the Lights and met up with our little French Toast crew who were in Toronto for the weekend. Courtney had very nice things to say about this movie and later reviewed it over on his site. Based on his recommendation I’ll probably check this out sometime at home. There’s so much good stuff out right now that this is a perfect time to catch up on some of the bigger movies I’ve missed, but this does seem like a decent watch.

  • Foxcatcher – Way back in the beginning of 2013 I put this movie on my list of most anticipate. Then it got delayed a year and I got a little worried. The thing is this seems to not be in that category of movies that are delayed because they aren’t particularly good. What I’m looking forward to the most is Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo’s performances which have all been so well received. The story is quite interesting, and even though I know the broad strokes I’ve remained relatively in the dark about the details. I’m so glad it’s finally coming out.

  • Rosewater – When Jon Stewart took a sabbatical from The Daily Show it was a pretty big deal. One, because it was very intriguing that he was foraying into filmmaking, and two, because John Oliver took over and showed that he could hold it down as host.  What exactly is this Rosewater I wondered. Well, after watching the trailer I wish I could be a little more excited. It looks like a good movie but it’s missing a hook for me. It the true story of Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was captured in the Middle East and tortured for information. The link to Stewart is that terrorists believed in part that he was spying based on an interview he gave on The Daily Show. I do like the lead actor, (definitely not Iranian) Gael García Bernal so that’s one more thing that’s drawing me in past the natural curiosity to see Stewart’s directing chops.See where it’s playing in select theaters here.
