Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Nightcrawler – Jake Gyllenhaal seems to be on one hell of an acting streak, from Prisoners to Enemy to Nightcrawler. Seeing as he’s one of my favorite people to watch on screen I couldn’t be more excited. So much in fact, that I haven’t even watched the trailer for this. I don’t need to, because I know for sure that I’ll be seeing this in theaters. I do know the plot involves Gyllenhaal playing a crime journalist in LA who gets pulled into its seedy underbelly (aren’t the seedy ones always the best underbellies? that sounds disgusting). Can’t wait to see how it unfolds.
- Before I Go To Sleep – This thriller is like a mix of Memento and 50 First Dates. Nicole Kidman has short term memory loss and wakes up every day to a husband she doesn’t know (Colin Firth), who helps catch her up to speed to make it through her day. Things go a little crazy when a mysterious neurologist (those two words rarely go together, I’m sure) played by Mark Strong who is trying to help her figure out what incident caused her memory loss. Maybe her husband isn’t to be trusted, but there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. This could be an interesting story, but it doesn’t look far better than your standard thriller, except for the cast. Seems like a solid cable watch.
- Saw – The 10th anniversary of this modern classic horror movie is being re-released in theaters for a limited engagement. Not much to say here other than that if you’re a fan of the franchise it’s a must see, but if you haven’t seen it in awhile it might be worth another watch. I recently watched it again with the FTS crew for our Wan-A-Thon and it was really fun to see again after all these years. It’s not perfect (the acting sure is shaky) but the ideas have definitely impacted the horror genre ever since.
- Horns – Horns is based on a Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son for the uninitiated) novel about a man who is accused of killing his girlfriend. He begins to sprout horns and develop fantastical abilities in the aftermath that help him to find the murdered. It has a horror-dark comedy tone from what I can tell, and the trailer definitely interests me. It’s recieved some mixed reviews, but I’d still like to check it out, especially since Daniel Radcliffe has received high marks in the lead role. It’s helmed by the solid horror director Alexandre Aja, so there’s definitely enough there for me to check this out.
Opening in select theaters.
